Owned by a chav, bad wheels, Lexarse lights Dump Valve and 4" exhaust, so it most likely has been ragged the nuts off.
Hvaent got a HDI but got the 1.9td and never had any issues with it. bought with 97k (ish) miles on the clock and now sitting at 126k :)
As long as they are looked after they will rung pretty much forever.

as above, i've got an old 1.9td thats gone 173k, no problems with engine touch wood! electric windows have given me some grief and thats about it. Followed the mods guide on 306 forum for pump and wastegate and it nips along nicely and still returns good MPG.

Thought you had the HDI for some reason :/
I've always liked the 306, never driven/owned one though :P

No wouldnt mind one though, i need to test drive a HDI, a normal 1.9 and a 1.9td to see which ones the best and most importantly which one gives better MPG :)

it pulls alot better and you can drive it comfortably without having to rag it to get it too speed, but all in all its not that much faster because of the extra weight and size of the car :)

That's from the pug306 forums, stage 1 is more like 115bhp, but that maps doesn't require any modifications to be done apart from the map :)

Ive had both 1.9 Dturbo and the HDi.
The difference in performance isnt big, and if you just trot about town, mpg isnt much different either (40+ if you drive reasonable with the occasional rag).
If its your first 306 derv, get the Dturbo...free tuning up to 120BHP (can see more if you push the TMIC), then with the cost of about £200 (FMIC and bosch fuel pump), you can see about 150BHP. Plus its alot simpler to repair due to it being mechanically driven instead of ECU controlled.
Then get the HDi....you will apprieciate it alot more in terms of power delivery and the little lifts to interior trim and exterior body panels....but it does come at a cost...a second hand P3 front bumper (with round fogs) goes for about £120 on average, where as the P1/2 front bumpers can top at £50...and if something goes wrong with the ECU....its expensive and complicated to fix.
As for mapping power.
Stage 1 - 125BHP on average from a Whippy map (most recommended on 306.net) and costs from £100 (I think thats the cost of a map now anyway) and doing it yourself, or travelling to have it done, but then its the labour costs and travelling costs to add to it.
Stage 2 - 150BHP on average from a Whippy map, costs about £100 (if you miss a stage 1) but you will need to buy all the parts for the FMIC and an uprated clutch which will push the budget up to £3-400.
