Hi all,

My brother has a Saab 9-3 Vector Sport 1.9 TID (150bhp) and yesterday in 3rd gear at about 3000rpm, we heard a noise and now the car makes a whiny noise.

We've had breakdown cover pick us up and say that it sounded like a loose hose, or split pipe, but the guy at AA said it's the turbo gone.

There is no black smoke, no juddering etc... but here is a video to show you the noise.

Enjoy, and please help, as we hope it's not the turbo.

Tried to look at all the pipes, but so are really awkward to get to. I'm not expert in diesels, let alone turbo's so was hoping to get some guidance from here, and then he will most likely take it to a garage, just don't want to get to a garage and them turn around and say £800 new turbo.

that certainly sounds like the turbo to be, you can hear it trying to spin up, but it sounds like all the pressure is being lost somewhere? Has it got the limp-home fail safe on it? if so has it gone into that mode? Thats the exact noise my mates vectra 1.9TDi was making and it was the turbo gasket that had gone.

its a real pain because on that engine the turbo is tucked away at the rear and is a real pig to get to.

Could be a split boost pipe, or even alternator/bearings. Just throwing ideas your way really because I'm not sure really.

it sounds like a boost hose has come off/split somewhere. sounds like the turbo is overspinning.

could be completely wrong but from the video it sounds like that.
