Referring solely to motor cars, well I thought I had seen most things in my sixty years but what I witnessed the other day defies all logic, reason or sense.I will explain what I mean: whilst driving a few days ago in Barnsley, Yorks my daughter casually mentioned the oil light was flickering every so often on and off and sometimes the temperature guage was showing red, so naturally I asked her when was this, she said every now and then..Following her statement as we were nearing her home I told her that I would check her oil next morning when the oil had cooled and returned to the sump.. .check it I did, and it was bone dry not a drop on the dip stick to which I said to her how long have you been driving the car with the oil light flickering, she said the garage was supposed to have serviced it 2 months ago Fcuk.. I said impossible.. driving a car bereft of oil in all that heavy traffic recipe for disaster to which she replied well I didn't know it had no oil..I quickly looked for any signs of engine failure i.e oily water.. could find none no knocks either, so I filled the sump for her with oil and looked for any signs of blue smoke and/or water in the exhaust found none so all appeared well I looked in the expansion bottle for signs of oil found none -someone please explain to me how this engine did not fail..I was told on Saxp that vtr's are robust engines I guess all Sax's must be as never yet in all the time I have owned and drove cars has any engine ran without oil...lucky or what!! :fcuk::wall:

Great post, kids ehh?
I've seen quite a few "oil light was flickering and the temperature guage showing red" posts on here.
I hope that all stays well with your daughter's car.
Cheers Bob

Your message, to me, is ambiguous mate, imho having drove any amount of motor cars, lots from yesteryear, only a Saxo runs without oil, what cannot speak cannot lie...Fiesta and your mate tell him/her to put some oil in it like I did this Saxo otherwise it won't just be the big ends that knock it will be a smashed crank, fucked up pistons valves the lot,it is like a human being running without blood... the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain will fail.
It is simply not worth running a car without oil, the fact that I stumbled upon this and acted quickly has indeed saved my daughter the embarrassment of a breakdown, no not a nervous one or that could be so when she saw the bill but the price of being pulled off the road to a garage and then being told your engine needs a replacement, because it is fucking seized... :wall:

Cheers Bob The car appears fine Bob, so much for garages and servicing eh!!. I would indeed urge people to get a good garage [try 'Which mag' recommended garages] and stay with them.Should a person check what they can, what they are able to after their motor has received garage servicing ? yes every single time, to not do so could bring misery and expense..I still do not know how this Sax did not fail though, lucky yep definitely ..

Normally, even if there is no oil on the dipstick, there's oil in the sump, ie, if the oil level is above the pick up point for the oil, the engine will still be lubricated, and not become 'cattled' all the same, far easier to pop the bonnet once a week and just pull out the stick when the engine is stone cold, before starting it, and no need to even get hands dirty! simples.
