as said it could be the release bearing but it could also be the input shaft bearing as they are quite known for packing up

yeah it makes the same noise when i'm moving, the noise only goes when i press the clutch. might change the oil and see where that takes me. how easy is it to remove the gearbox if i decide to take things further???

clutch relese bearing will turn more when clutch pressed mate more likely problem with the box as when clutch depressed gearbox stops turning bearing should not turn when clutch up unless badly adjusted

I disagree.

When the clutch is engaged (foot off pedal) the release bearing is more noisy because it is not under pressure against the pressure plate cover so it spins and rattles.

When the clutch is disengaged (foot on pedal) the release bearing is pressed with quite a lot of pressure against the pressure plate cover so it stops is rattling so much.

In my opinion the clutch release bearing is much more common than gearbox input shaft bearing and almost everyone i know including me (2 saxos, 3 release bearing failures) has this problem at some point.

Hope that helps!

Hi Dan,

Good luck, check here: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=314531

In the first two pictures of the release bearing the metal ring is the release bearing race that presses on the pressure plate. If it looks like these its knackered. If you try to rotate that metal race with your finger it MUST feel smooth any feelings of notchy operation also means its knackered.

im a mechanic with 20 years experience clutch bearing should not spin all the time unless it the kind imersed in gearbox oil or its not adjusted properly the small amount of grease in them would only last 5 mins at engine revs all day every day take the box out mate it could be there is a prob with bearing hope so for your sake but if its correctly adjusted more likely to be the box

probably wont find anything without taking the box apart, unless its the clutch release bearing like most people have said..

dan84
19th June 2010, 18:56
it stops spinning as soon as i take my hand off it, does that mean its nackered??!!

jon748

bearing on the input shaft. i had it and thought it was the engine tapping until i noticed it went with the clutch depressed. new box and it was all good.

can i not just replace the bearing on the input shaft then?
