sold the saxo and bought a seat leon so rung premium choice to ask them to swap the car they said no cant quote me so i said well ill have to cancel the insurance then they said ok blah blah blah.. then he went on to say your insurance was soo much for the year which was around £600 and you've paid so far about £267 inc 117 deopsit.... so he then said due to early cancel we work out you still owe us £174 even though ive wasted £30 top ups just trying to cancel the thing.. so i said well theres no chance you'll be getting that so he goes on to say its in your terms n condition so i said if its over 12 months ill pay it back if not then you wont get anything.. ive cancelled policys before and never paid a penny.. altogether ill have nearly paid 600 without even keeping policy 6month if i pay the 174 surely they cant make me pay that??

I could be wrong but as far as i know if you cancel a policy early then you will be liable to pay a fee, usually what they call an admin fee i believe.

i had this with virgin, but my fee was waved ;)
check your paper work, if you cancel you will probably be charged no matter what,
however you want to carry on, they wont insure you so there refusing to insure your not cancelling and the fee should be waved as there not willing to carry on.
might be the same case, might not but its worth the effort

I thought if you cancel your insurance it was a case of paying a months costs as a fee.

Surely they can't charge you if they can't insure you on your new car, not your fault is it?

Seems strange that, I wouldnt have thought you'd have to pay that amount as you've not had the cover for 12 months yet they're expecting full cover, yeah you have to pay an admin charge but shouldn't be anywhere near that much :/
As Rich84 has said, they're refusing to insure so they shouldn't be charging surely?
Possibly try phoning again and speaking to someone else, dont tell them about what that guy said, and see if you get a different situation, sometimes it works
