View Full Version : Are you paying too much for your V Power?

Then spare a thought for a moment.
I filled up with Shell's finest V Power today on the Autoroute at:
€1,55 per LITRE (About £1,41)
:panic::panic::panic::panic:
Back to 95 for the next week I think lol!

Does it really make any difference on a car with 120bhp. I remember thay tested this and on a 300bhp scooby it only added about 8 bhp.

There's a lot of myth flying around about it being "better" but the bottom line is unless your car is mapped to run 99ron is does fuck all apart from cost more.

I though a higher octane rating meant it was harder to burn to there was less chance of premature combustion?

If your going to run on 99 Ron fuel then you need a remap as most cars are mapped to run on 97 Ron.

Actually it's harder to burn, higher octane fuel is less easy to ignite.

Why do you put 99RON into your shi7ty tin can'd engines? Its a waste of money. Unless you have a high performance car like a scooby then its worth it.
They did a test on this crap in the which magazine and said exactly what i have said above. Though they did say fill up with V-Power every few month's to clean the injectors and crap out as its cheaper then red-ex.
I might run on the new fuel... 101 RON

Just worked out at 40mpg with reguler you are paying £0.129449966 per mile (113.9p per litre as I pay at asda)
With optimax or whatever with an extra 2 mpg (as claimed by mike) you are paying £0.135192113 per mile (124.9 as I think someone mentioned earlier)
Optifail looses.

Vast records eh?
I can just picture your hard drive lad, a vast and exciting database of graphs and spreadsheets journalising every single mile you drove in the car, every drop of petrol, and also tachographs of the speed and rpm you have been driving at over the last 11 and a half months, with different coloured tabs alerting you to when you switched on the aircon, heated rear screen etc
Then you were up without sleep for 6 days straight, preparing a final report summarising every piece of information...

basically there is no point in buying super fuel in a very un-super standardish saxo. If I ever bought a brand new fancy car I probably would, but I see no point.

Na, just jot down the mileage for each tank that it has covered, ensure it is filled to the same point each time (brimmed), and go from there.
It is also a strange thing that the harder I drive the car (to a point) the better the MPG?!

I could do with some of the 101 stuff as my car is mapped for 100 octane.
To answer someones question from earlier no UK Hondas are mapped for UK 95octane fuel and the JDM Hondas are mapped for Japanese 100octane fuel.

Uh huh.
Sayer is a nerdy legend as usual.
Re the higher revs thing, cue Autocar:
Economy did improve, with the cross-country figure rising from 24.3mpg to 37.4mpg – a 35 per cent increase. That means over the course of 20,000 miles, we would save £1,400 filling up with the costly super unleaded the Clio demands. But a word of warning on high-octane fuel – although it can be beneficial, we’ve seen prices nearing £1.20 a litre at some forecourts.
Overall economy didn’t see as dramatic a rise – the short gearing means the 197 was never going to be that efficient on multi-lane roads. Yet a gain of 8mpg isn’t to be sniffed at, and nor is the fact my CO2 emissions have fallen by over 1.7 tonnes per year and I have an extra £813 in my pocket.
So we know it’s possible to save fuel and money in a hot hatch. The thing is, I feel it goes against the grain of owning one. Eco-driving doesn’t suit the Clio at all. Oliver expressed his frustration at not being able to unleash the full potential of his BMW, and for the 197, it’s even worse. I’m happy to sacrifice some economy so I can make the most of cross-country roads. But
I may ease off on motorways – the thought of saving more than £800 a year is tempting...
MikeCracknell
7th June 2010, 17:29
Also Wiki:
so low-octane fuel can be used in an engine designed for high octane, with some reduction in efficiency and performance. If the engine is designed for high octane then higher-octane fuel will result in higher efficiency and performance under certain load and mixture conditions

Re the higher revs thing, cue Autocar:
Thats just saying that the Clio doesn't suit eco-driving
As in it's full potential is unleashed on country roads
Doesn't mean that fuel economy is better when you've driving harder, it should be worse
But in all honesty, why do you care? If you can afford to buy and tax and insure a Clio 197, surely you're financially secure enough to not give a fuck about losing a few MPG or paying a bit extra for the correct fuel?
It's like the people with £50,000+ BMW's who complain about the rise in road tax prices, an extra £100 a year or so, wow

Mine is ok if i slip it in 6th and just cruise, probably get about 27mpg at best
In VTEC though i dread to think what it'l be..
Drove my mates Corrola 1.8 VVTi ages ago and it was showing 3.4mpg at 8000rpm off the limiter. And thats just a 1.8 with about 180bhp
So you'd imagine a 2.0 with 220bhp sitting at 8500rpm might be even less than 3.4mpg :geek:
