View Full Version : 206 gti 138 and 180 whats the difference?

Apart from the obvious horsepower, insurance prices etc.
My mate bought the 138 version and is wondering as its still a 2.0 engine why is it so much slower than the 180? Is it a detuned version of that engine?
What mods could he do to get the performance of the 180? And try to keep up with me LOL

if you ever read the spec of the 2 cars like on parkers of something they say despite the 42bhp difference the top speed difference is only 5mph as the 138 does 130mph and the 180 does 135mph (got my 138 to 132mph and shit a brick so didnt go any faster)
other than the horse power tho the only other major differences are wheels and interior bits.
as to getting it running to 180bhp just do the normal bits you would do with any other cars
hope this helps a little bit buddy

There is rumours that the earlier 180's only made 150hp.

nothing against 206 gti as i say i had one and i loved it but let your mate know that if he has trouble with his speedo or climate control to get rid as it will cost him a fortune to fix serious money spent close to £500 at 3 different places to get it fix and no one could find what was wrong serious bad times

I like the fact he has the 206 lol
quote from him after a lil thrash on the motorway..
"You dropped it into 4th when you flew past me didn't you?!"
ME "erm no it was 5th actually"

what colour has he got?
ill dig some pics out of mine

He has that orange colour but he's just had the roof, bonnet and spoiler sprayed gloss black. Looks really good. He's kind of copying me on mods but i don't mind. He has black angels now too-same as me.

I used to want one but decided on a saxo instead. Jezza says the 206 gti 180 is a properly good car..

14th June 2010, 15:44
The 180 has variable valve control and a whole load of other pap. Not nearly as good as the 306 GTI-6 or the Clio 182 though

14th June 2010, 15:44
i would have a 206 gti over a vts, saxo does look better but, you get more extra's with the 206 and are more modern inside, plus there not that much slower than vts
hard_corejoeboy
14th June 2010, 15:50
The 138 is a lot slower than my VTR 16V
But then i do have a fairly decent spec engine..

ive just got a GTI 138 after having 2 VTR's with the usualy breathing mods. the 206 is fairly quicker and has alot more torque, much more modern inside aswell and has some nice little extras, air con, auto wipers, leather seats etc etc.
drives much better and tbh its handles great and im still on the standard suspension, can throw it into corners just liek a saxo if not better than, and the lift of over steers is ALOT of fun :D

That would look quite nice lowered i think. Funny you should say its quicker than a VTR though as when i had my VTR engine in i was still beating him (although only tested to 3rd gear)
Spanky
14th June 2010, 16:06
the lowering will be done soon, want to get a few things done before USC @ santa pod.
im not going to lie i had a little play with a VTR and it was rather close untill 3rd gear tbh where i just sailed past but mine is totally standard....... for now ;)

on paper the gti should be quicker anyway

The 180 is the same engine as in the c4 vts 180, the 180 has quite a few things different from the other 2.0 one. On the c4 forum most people asking how to get 180 power from a 138 get told to buy the 180 instead lol...

I owned a 180 and you cant compare it to a 138, 138's are around the same as a Fiesta ST performance wise, 180 is quite abit quicker than a VTS in std form & when mapped play with Type R's easy.

14th June 2010, 22:06
The 180 has a kind of vvti thats how it gets the power it does, it also has uprated suspension, and a uprated rear axle, possibly better brakes but i cant be sure on them

Easily play with a Type-R?
It couldn't play a game of noughts and crosses against a JDM Type-R

FYI as i said above my car wasn't standard it had Full exhaust decatted, CAIS, & Mapped. Although most of the Type R's were modded you know the big tacky jap cans alot opt for LOLz

Jap cans aren't tacky on Jap cars, they're only shit on Saxo's, 106's etc etc
Any good exhaust for a Jap car all have the same jap style tailpipes.. Buddyclub, J's Racing, Spoon, Apexi, Mugen they are all lairy tailpipes.. Thats just the style of them. No Magnex, Piper, Mongoose shite etc
What Type-R's did you 'dick' then? EP3 maybe yeah

You aren't one of these people who believe Type R's are the quickest cars on the plannet are you?
I guess we are all different but imo the big jap cans are always tacky.
Type R's i 'dick' ~ Old shape Integra in white with one of those awsome exhausts you describe and Ep3's & the new shape was the slowest for sure although at the time the car was brand new so maybe the engine wasn't quite ready for it or the driver heald back a bit if it's usually quicker than the older styled one. I didn't meet any of the old banger style ones though which are meant to be super quick.
Btw i like Type R's im just saying my old 180 beat them when it was modded with fair ease.

Old shape Integra is the DC2 which is about EP3 speed, and under 200bhp. And it may of even been a UKDM DC2 which is even slower
UKDM EP3's aint that fast, sub 200bhp again
I don't think Type-R's are the greatest thing ever no, but i just don't think people should generalise "dicking Type-R's" and not being specific about it..especialy when the Type-R's in question are under 200bhp.
It's like me racing a 1.2 Subaru Justy and then saying i smoke Subaru's
I don't know how you can call jap cans tacky, the J's Racing stuff is mega bucks, the 70rr exhaust is well over £1000! Can't remember exactly how much but waaay over a grand...nice tacky price tag to match its looks eh :A:
I paid £360 for my Apexi cat back which was second hand used! £360 will buy you a full brand new system for a GTi, maybe even a manifold aswell!

Most Gti 180's aren't even 170 bhp std so whats the chances of mine being anywhere near 200 with Full exhaust/ filter/ map?
& sorry next time il say exactly what moddel i pwn... who really gives a shit ffs lol. I just that because the 180's are underrated to show what sort of level speedwise they are at with minor mods.
- My comment after was because like most Type R owners i knew you'd bite after your previous comment.
FYI a full system for a Gti 180 would be around a grand - Full - and probably not much less for a 138.
Actually can you please dig me up some links to prove you can buy a full system - not custom crap - for anywhere near that price please as if i revert back to a 180 that would be dead usefull:y: - not catback -
I wouldn't be so happy to find im paying more for the same thing just because it's 'JDM yo' but each to there own.
No need to get worked up btw.

All i said was don't just say "dicks on Type-R's", when there are so many different types of Type-R...you dicked on sub 200bhp Type-R's, is what you should have put
Next thing you know some clown will read this, and try and race me in his 206 with exhaust, remap and filter thinking he can dick any Type-R.. LOL
Found a Scorpion catback for £370 on eBay, theres not much else on there though for the 180...you know what i mean though, can't call things "tacky" just because it would look wierd on your French motor. We aint paying more because its JDM y0...you get what you pay for
And i aint getting worked up lad, you're the one using bold and underline tags to emphasise things haha, i'm cool as a cucumber watching Deal or No Deal

Type R's are nice and id defo have one, but 180s are very underrated and often people that have never owned one or tried one chat crap about them being silly slow but it's not the case and id have been enclined to believe it all until i bought one and found out for myself:)

i really like the 180's.. I was contemplating either an ST, 180 , or clio 182 for my new car.... i know you'll all say 18 but i just cant fall in love with the looks of them as i did when i saw the 180gti.
Im prepared to sacrafice some power for the looks, its going to be quicker than my VTR anyway so not like ill miss anything.
I love the interior, The extras, and the wheels are sex IMO.
I'd love a black one or a blue one with white powder coated 180 rims. I think there fuckin awesome looking.
Jezza liked them, Bar the air con, he said it was something like that of an asthmatic person blowing at you through a straw, Which i imagine is jezza's over exageration lol.

just bought GTI 138. Must say, its alot quicker than my VTR. GTI is standard, VTR running 160+bhp. Love my VTR but just feel that although the 206 isnt as good looking, its comfier, more well equipped and has less of the 'boy-racer' police target stigma attached to it. In my line of work, that helps alot :y:

You must have a 180. There is no way in blue fuck a standard 138 would be anywhere near a 160+bhp VTR! & from that comment I dispute you had a 160+ bhp VTR what did you have a open cone and jap can lol.

Mate also had a Gti 180 and it was a good car.For the money they go for nowadays,i would pick 1 over an EP3,Clio etc.
His was also on par with EP3's.We suspect it wasn't standard though as it was slightly quicker than another local lads 180.Never looked into it,but it did have a different exhaust system.
Nice seats too.

to be honest bud, i know jack shit about modifying cars, i just buy them and sell them lol. but got reciept of BHP test done on VTR when it had 75000 on the clock (it now has 80000) and it says its pushing around 167BHP give or take 5-7.
