View Full Version : What is 'Rasp'?

sup... total noob question here.
I've never, EVER, been a fan of loud exhausts, since they sound complete and utter pap. But when people ask a question about a particular exhaust noise... the response that is usually bounded around is 'rasp(y)'.
seriously, wtf is rasp?
Is 'rasp' just a cool way of saying 'sounds farty? Because I've yet to hear a saxo that sounds, what I would perceive as, raspy - i.e. almost a light swooshing tone under the normal exhaust note.
Secondly,
What exhausts are understood to be 'raspy'?
Supersprint?
Mongoose?
Magnex?
Piper?
anything else?
Does anyone have video's of said 'rasp'.

I'd say my pugsport 2" is pretty 'raspy".
edit:
Search youtube for "pugsport".

so high pitched farty sound then?

rasp is when they sound like an angry wasp to most people
the smaller 2" systems tend to be 'raspy' due to the fast gas flow whereas larger systems are boomy as its a slower movement in them
im not sold on most of them tbh but i am getting a kam racing system to modify soon i think

Ive mentioned this a few times.
When I switched from Magnex to Pugsport on the 106, I experienced the dreaded wet fart noiise, let me explain as technically as I can:
It sorta sounds like "ppppphhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" "ppppppppppppphhhhhhhharrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" "pppppphhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaarrrr".
I believe this is rasp.

nononono lol
I think alexb has explained it pretty good.
For example when i put my hand behind my exhaust you can feel the fumes like push my hand back in fast pulses.

The full magnex system is a 2" and gives off the more boomy tone. I think thats due to its large backbox not dependant on the diameter of the system.
I have pugsport centre now with the magnex backbox on and its odd, boomy exhaust tone on idle but very wet fartish at high revs.

?
got ya...!
hang on... should maybe have a thread getting to people to describe their exhaust notes could be fun.

meant smaller exit systems sorry most are a 2" centre
the magnex iirc is 2 2" exits ent it?

nothing needs modifying as such
im just being a bit different with it to how you guys have it
its not that i think there a bad design ect i just want a very specific thing and the closest/easiest to make like it is your 2.25" jobbie

My perception of rasp was
VVVVVVVVVVVRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPP
until I got got throttle bodies then it went more like
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB BBBBRWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

Ahh I got you. Though you may have ment that. No idea on the 106 but the Saxo one is 3.5", my old Saxo Magnex sounded exactly the same as my 106.
But then this contradicts our theory. :zainy:

mine at would be hard to do
its standard just minus a cat
kinda farts and thuds
but kinda like
ppphhhhrrraaaaaaaaaa (lets of throttle) dub dub dub
where as my 205 'rasps'
its more bwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh and then clacks and bangs on let off

no it doesnt as 2 2" exits and a 3.5 are onlt .5" apart dude
I would say my Supersprint is raspy but I wouldn't say for a second it sounds bad. Everyone who has heard my exhaust thinks it sounds awesome.

my old Kwikfit system sounded like
'dddddduuuuuurrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnnohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'
I actually liked the noise, bit didn't have enough boom to it and was a shitty piss poor fit.

Thinking about it... Alex, remember when we popped the magnex on at willsy's garage? That system that came off that I left there was the Kwikfit system! Do you still have it?
Forgot to mention my magnex system goes
'rrrrrrrruuuuuuuuunnnnnn-burble-burble-nnnnnnnnnnnnnn' when decelerating in gear between 2k and 1.7k rpm.

i dont have a clue what is a raspy exhaust
I have a group n system on my 205 gti and the gases come out with much more force than standard.
For example if u put a peice of paper against a standard sytem it will just blow past, the raspy group n wil blow a hole thru the paper lol an that's at idle.
When I floor it it sounds like a total beast lol
Exhaust porn if u like lol
Popopopo raaaaaaaaaa for those of u who like a sound explanation!
This is my definition of rasp, standard GTI system with a decat:

I like Piper exhausts personally - seem to get a little bit of rasp, but not enough for it to sound totally gash. See here (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll231/Andylee123/?action=view¤t=PB120957.flv). :)

best way i can describe it is having a sharp metalic edge to the sound.
but here is the way you were probably looking for ads lol
The abnormal noise, known as rasping noise by several exhaust muffler designers, is a metallic intermittent noise which irritates the ear and has an adverse effect on vehicle marketability. It occurs in small cars having no more than two boxes in their exhaust systems. This phenomenon is highly noticed during a rapid acceleration or deceleration in cold conditions. However, it is sharply attenuated when the exhaust system is warmed up. An experimental study has been undertaken. Several exhaust systems, ranging from a simple pipe to a complete exhaust line, are tested. Pressure measurements in the line are performed by piezoelectric transducers. The tail pipe noise measurements are performed by a microphone. It has been observed that, unlike the usual exhaust noise that contains essentially second and fourth orders, the perception of the so-called rasping noise is associated with high-frequency components in the signal and needs higher-order analysis to be fully characterized. The experiments also show the steepening of the waves when rasping noise is listened. The high axial temperature gradient causes an increasing of that effect and probably a generation of shock waves which excite the main muffler and cause the metallic noise.
