did you agree your contract in the shop, or online/over the phone?

Distance selling regs allow a cooling off period where you can cancel for any reason you like of you bought online/over the phone. If you walk into a store and sign the contract, it's generally a done deal.

Nope I'm sorry - it's true. :(

Contracts signed on trade premises are exempt from any statutory "cooling off period". The logic is you've chosen to go into the store and made an informed decision to purchase the service you asked for.

A specific example for you: http://www.prfire.co.uk/press-release/buying-a-mobile-phone-this-xmas-safer-to-shop-online-3412.html

fair enough...im surprised at that because i would of that that you are more vulnerable to hard selling in store and that if anything you may be even more likely to change your mind if a pursuasive sales man has presseured you into taking out a contract
