hey right iv had a really good offer come up basicly the village i live in theres a lady with a 106 gti in cherry red standard 82k miles lots of service history in absoulute mint condition and only had 3 lady owners from new.
the problem is i would do anything for this car i was actually hoping for a 106 gti next april time as i will be able to afford it then but the problem i have atm is i have notihng no money atall.
now i cant decide if i should get a loan as i know this one runs sweet no problems mint ondition and as its going to someone she knows she said shel let it go for 2k as its goes to someone she knows. asking price is 2500
its not really in my interest atm as i cant afford it but with a loan and insurance swap i can be the owner of the car i really want and in one of my fav colours. what shall i do people?
are loans easy affordable im with halifax so ideally i would go with them for a loan just want advice really do you lot think i should go for it now? or save abit and do it when i get my 2 years no claims.
also my current car is not sellable really as bootfloor was moved from an accident.

thats always what iv though but il probably end up carless for a good few months if thats the case because mine isnt going to get through next mot in april without alot of money being spent wont be worth it.
such a tough decision its only a 2k loan and il spread it over 4 years looked on halifax.
just need to find out insurance prices.
then i can have a real idea of the costs

2k loan over 4 years! you're brave. My advice would be avoid a small loan like that especially over that period of time. I took out £6000 to buy my saxo and insure it for the first year as i had no money saved for a car. I've still got a year left to pay, and i wish i'd never bothered.

can family not help you out? then you can pay it of in your own time and not have the hassle of the loan on your ass

Finance/loan = steer well clear bud.
There will always be those special minters, they come and go. Believe me the patience will pay off and you will find another superb example and then you'll be thanking yourself for not being impulsive before and jumping for a loan.
Especially in these hard times, keep every penny you have. No point giving a loan company interest. Save a bit longer, work a bit harder, wait a bit. You'll get that dream car!

You won't buy a shitter though. You will be smart enough to be incredibly picky and patient to find the right one!

lol i am an impatient person but as you say doubt il get a shitter. hmmm this is a tough one and looks like most you guys are against getting a loan.
other problem is i do like things easy so the fact i could walk to the persons house in less than 5 mins makes it very easy.

Well if you take out a loan, don't do it over 4 years, try 2 years.
Wouldn't you get any money from selling your car?
adamm
26th June 2010, 12:16
as said i would have to break my car. theres also alot of bits on it i want to keep.
yeah advice on loans is what i need and i guess 4 years is to long. what would be best optioon with a 2k loan?
adamm
26th June 2010, 12:26
what about a credit card? would i be able to get a 2k credit card?
auds

Don't get a credit card, god that's worse than a bank loan....2k over 2 years isn't too bad on repayments, or never used to be....you need to shop around for the best interest rate...not necessarily your own bank....then you need to figure out if you can really do it, pay back those payments every month plus the insurance....is your job secure?? You have to think about the whole picture....as if your job isn't secure or if you are going to be pushing it to pay back the loan and insurance etc then you may get into shite and then you lose the dream car....so think long and hard about it.
If your car isn't going to pass MOT then in one way this gti is a good thing and makes sense to get it....but you just need to be sure you can pay it all back comfortably :)
Get onto your Dad first, explain it all to him, you never know, he might surprise you :y: if that fails get online and check out the banks interest rates and check out the repayments they quote then get onto insurance and get some quotes :)
Good luck with it all Adam, and you are terrible for decision making lol ;)

I really wouldn't want to get into debt just over a car, i'd jsut save then when you have enough money, start looking then

Don't break - Sell your car, borrow the few hundred from your dad, or get a 12 month intrest free credit card. Done.

Don't buy what you can't afford imo, if you want a 106 gti, save up and when you have the money you can spend it on what you want, but don't go spending the banks money, you will just end up paying for it through the nose later on. thats what i go by, even if i do really really like a car, i know i can't have it yet as i don't have the money, this gives more motivation. for example i sold 3 cars in 1 week by working flat out so that i could buy my Renault twingo GT. no finance no loan. hope this helps :)

just get a loan and get it, its not going to be around for long and u will regret it if it goes to a boy racer who will write it off within weeks, u will see it in the scrapyard and you will want to die, so to save yourself just get a load, you only live once :)

precisly you only live once so therefore don't live a life in debt.

Well you can take out the loan cover...which means if you lose your job and can't keep up the repayments...they pay it for a year...or something like that...I had a 2k loan and I think my repayments were around £80 a month (this was a fair few years ago though) and I lost my job....they paid it for a year though....but I myself would never get a loan or credit now...I would rather pay cash for everything, and save for stuff tbh....I hate to get into debt after having been in debt, it is the shit :n:
I'm sure there will be an even better gti come along in the future with less mileage on it too....up to you at the end of the day though :)

Also, although a loan might not be the best choice for an individual, debt is actually necessary and contributing as a whole, you're actually being selfish by not borrowing.
Go on, do it, don't be selfish. :p.

problem is i cant be without a car for that long to give me time to save. im going to get a quote if it only pushes it up by a couple hundred im going to search for some good loans and see where it goes from that. i understand what people are saying about saving and not paying interest as thats money for nothing really. thats what the decision is about really weather its worth paying interest on a loan or waiting and saving and having no car for a fair few months. problem is i do also want to spend money on the car as its standard except cams and exhaust. i really need towork out what its going to cost me on a monthly basis first before i make a decision if i can afford it and have money left over il probaqbly go for it but if its tight and that im not going to bother.
a mate of mine is managing to afford a 11K 10plate corsa on finance and hes on less money than me

What I would say is go to your dad and explain the situation. At least see if he can lend you some money towards it, for example 1k. Is there anyone else you can borrow money from? Try and avoid a loan if you can though.

just get a loan, your only in debt it you can't afford the re-payments.
alright you'll pay a bit of interest but whats a few hundred quid over 2 years?
and whats the point in saving, when a loan is just like saving in reverse

Get a loan and get the car. if you dont, some little chav will wrap it.
i look out 1500 for my car over 2 years ( car actually only cost 1250) and my last payment is october.
i had actually expected to have sold it by now and paid the loan off, but i love it too much and 5 morwe payments it will be alll mine.
GTi's come and go.... but the rare minters that have been looked after are worth their weight in gold..... go for it
