Whats the problem?

Apparently my uncles mate was playing with his Air Conditioning etc. Then while driving the car went weird, no speed dials working, no air con and finally no PAS. The car then cut out and died. The so called mechanic that come out and recovered his vehicle apparently couldn't tell him what the fault was due to its his job not to but explained its something to do with an Air Conditioning Belt. I told my uncle that's bullshit, it don't have an Air Con belt in the engine bay & the mechanics chatting shit. He seems to believe the mechanic. Now the car don't even turn over like the battery is flat. Wondering if anyone has come across a similar problem before?

Did he check the voltage across the alternator? Have you tried jumpstarting it?

I might be wrong but on my car the Power Steering Pump and Air con pump, both work off the same belt, aka Auxillary/drive belt? If both of them failed it sounds it could be related to the belt?

alternator ?
asabove . . .check the voltage across!

Dom

Nope, he won't let me touch it until I have some possible explanations. My first thought was Alernator problem, but would this take out the Air Con, Speed dials and finally PAS first?

Dom

Could someone explain how I will check the voltage across the alternator?

Chuffy

do you possess a multimeter?

Dom

I think he has one?

Sounds like he has lost the aux drive belt
as on most cars that controls the pas and ac.
If the belt wasnt on then the alternator wouldnt spin and so put no charge in the battery..
With the number of electrical circuits on a car these days a battery wont last long.
And on a modern car a flat battery will cause the dials to go mental

Are they expensive to fix at Jaguar? compared to the price of a local garage?

avoid jump starting modern cars!

and why is that?
Let me guess it can cause an ecu spike?
Why is it such a common way for auctions, garages, recovery companies to start a car?
We do hundreds a week at work and i cant recall us doing any damage.

Any way it certainly wont be thousands if it just needs a new belt.
Bet the garage is quiet so trying to make some work.

Just passing on what i was told

"Why is it such a common way for auctions, garages, recovery companies to start a car?"

because they dont care about the cars really

i think you will find they do care.
If it turns up running then the battery goes flat, they jump it.
If that fucks the ecu up they have to fix it.
That costs them money and removes profit.

When you can make a valid comment backd up with actual proof and not just something you heard down the pub then please feel free to post it.

calm down mate, just what we were told at college, if you have a charger to use it instead of jumping if possible

Actually am falling in love with the Jag X Type. Will most likely be my next car, 2.2D Sport is the model I want, panther black, looks deadly. For around 6 grand can get an absolute minter. Hope your uncles problem is sorted now though bud.

Price on repairing anyone? lol

Price of a drivebelt, + 1 hour labour absolute maximum.

Anyone with basic mechanical knowledge can change a drivebelt.
