Hey.
Just bought a new car, has factory head unit but does not store radio stations. Multi-metered each of the wires and come to the conclusion that the wire that is supposedly permanent live only recieves power when the ignition is on (hence not holding the stations).
Anybody have an idea why this is? All the wiring seems original so i cant see how the permanent live can change to ignition live.
Enlighten me! :P

there will be 2 power feeds
a yellow perm live
a red ignition live
the wire you found is the ignition, now search for the perm.. if you cant find it check the fuses with the multimeter

Sorry, didnt make myself clear.
I know all the business with red and yellow wires but thats not my problem. I know which wire is supposed to be permanent and which wire is supposed to be ignition.
The problem was the fact that both of these wires are ignition, hence not holding the settings. This is on the original car loom as i said so no matter how many wires i swap on my headunit loom it aint gonna sort out the original problem.
All fuses are intact as well. So im stumped.

So you have tried both wires as the battery wire?
I no this prob an insulting question, but are you defo wiring it to the correct wire on the back of the hu?

if i remember right, it was the thinnest wire that was the battery wire and mine was greyish i think.

What year is your car on? Any other things fitted like alarms etc?

only other thing then is that someone has removed a perm live when fitting an alarm / mobo / big install. If you know about wiring then there are a fair few other perm lives you can go, even taking one from the battery with a fuse if needs be.
personally i would go to the fuse box and source a perm live and take a feed off that.

Its completeley standard as far as i can tell.
Im guessing i will have to make my own permanent live, which wont be hard, its just annoying that the original wiring isnt working and i have no idea why.
AdamH where would you take it from the fusebox? i dont really wanna stick another connection on the battery, got 2 already.

Dunno if sax fusebox is the same but most cars just have a positive input tab thing on them that comes straight from the positive battery cable and other side Negative which goes to ground, it'll have be quite a large one but just whip an big eyelet on there that will fit! :)
My mates fiesta is the same so i might suggest him doing this, we've tried everything lol

What you should do is get a haynes manual that will tell you what rating fuse you need. the circuit in the fuse box you need. get a cacble from the fused side of the fuse box to the HU and you have a perm live.

I can't seem to get behind the fusebox to find a live wire, its encased in something i can't remove. Very frustrating!
The only permanent live ive found at the moment is the passenger airbag. Take it off that or leave well alone?
