have a look around the site, 80 mm is pretty low at the back, 60 mm all around would still be pretty low. being 20 and owning a vts doesnt sound too bad, but it all depends on what you can afford, but learning in a vts maybe abit difficult. All depends on money mate.

Now i have a question, pics of said girlfriend...

Before you get a hail of comments saying "use the search!!!!!" - Use the search ;)

Check for:

Bend in back axle
Rotting in boot/arches
Rust in engine bay
Oil leaks
Corrosion on front legs

There's more but I can't think of any at the moment.

Obviously check the body work (don't bother looking if its been raining and the car is wet, you wont see marks or dents so easily). Check for rust around the doors, sills, arches etc.

You want to check that the interior is good, no tears or burns etc.

Now onto the 'mechanical' stuff. Easiest is check that all the electrics work, wipers, lights, washer jets/wipers, heated rear window, heating/fan system... everything.

under the bonnet... Check for oil around the head... if theres any, the headgasket may be on the way out. You can also remove the oil cap to check for a milky sort of build up. If there is any, walk away.

Start the engine, walk around the car and listen to see how smooth it runs, check the exhaust doesnt blow, the car idles/ticks over nicely etc.

May sound silly, but stick your head in the arches and have a good look at the coil springs, make sure they look in good order, no cracks or fractures, havent popped out. Potholes can cause this... you don't want to be driving and then suddenly a damaged coil spring rips into the tyre.

Check it comes with a spare wheel etc.

(i'll think of more eventually, I've been awake 19 hours!)

EDIT:

Check the tyres for tread (if the tread is crap, you'll have to replace the tyres after the sale of the car... don't really want to be doing that) Also check how the tyres have worn.. for example, if the previous owner didnt have the tyres inflated to the correct pressure, the wear may not be even accross the width of the tyre.

Check for service history, V5 document, any accidents/repairs etc, check the timing belt has been changed.. should be after/at 65,000 miles roughly

EDIT again:

If it has a sunroof, sit in the car with the doors closed, have a good sniff for any damp smell... this will indicate a leaking sunroof which is bad news. Water can also come in through the hole the aerael sits in. (Mine had this, it came through there, and then through the housing of the interior light).

EDIT yet again:

Test driiiive, check the handling, the clutch, the brakes, how smooth it all is etc. Check the car doesn't pull to one side (do this on a straight piece of road). Make sure you try the car on different types of road. For example country/winding roads to check handling and suspension over bumps, and go on an a road to check the car at 60mph. make sure you use all the gears, check all changes are smooth. Check that there are no horrible noises, or severe rattling etc. Saxo's are notorious for small interior rattles, nothing really to worry about. Also, when going round corners, check for knocking noises etc... This may indicate a suspension or driveshaft issue.

Copied across, couldn't find the thread on buying

If you modify your car without informing your insurers, your insurance is invalid mate.

TomBob

Personally I think you should go for the vtr as it'll be cheaper to insure and your girlfriend will be using it to learn in. Plus the insurance will be cheaper

dont mod it mate, you won't get a lot of support on here if that's your way of thinking about insurance.

You might as well not insure it at all

oooh look at the saxo police 'Declare...DECLARE'

i can assure you there will be people on this sight that dont declare all their mods/ points.

my points etc are declared. i emailed elephant to enquire what it would push it up to putting on my lowering, lights....and if painting the standard wheels counts as modifying.

these are such little things, that if it does put itup... im not putting them on. not like im rocking with a big ass bodykit or super charged engine undeclared. got a little set of lights and a little lowered....
