Sounds like the exhautst is blowing, could have cracked or split. Check it for holes. Does it sound kind of like a tractor?

If it sounds like a tractor, you either have a blown exhaust of the pipe has rusted away, thats what happened to me.

Slight hole in the pipe, mine does and it burble and pops like a bitch :D mind you iv got a 16v engine with straight through pipe to a peco bigbore 2 so it rumbles.

As above really. The flange of the pipe connected to the cat converter had rusted away and sounded like a tractor farting..was hideous!

By the sound of it you have a whole in your exhaust,

Also a monkey could put a new one on so you will have no problems fixing it.

1.4 mk2

does this problem explain the bubbling aswell, or is that something else?

depends how bad it is to be honest. A small hole is OK, a big patch of rust is likely to crack when you drive. Maybe you should have a look before driving it. Change ASAP before it gets worse.

It is is a small hole nip to Halfords and get a Holts exhuast repair kit, basically squeeze the gun gum round the hole in the pipe, place the clamp round, tighten it up, then cover in the rest of the gum, wait till it hardens then it will be a good temp fix till you can afford a new pipe, just don't drive hard or you will blow blow the seal like I did haha
