Alternator problem? Please help

Hi. Im new to the site. My partner owns an V reg Saxo desire that has been making a slightly high pitched noise for some weeks now. I suspect that this is an alternator issue. Im no expert with cars but Im wondering if this is merely the belt or if the entire alternator would need to be replaced? The only real symptom is the high pitched loud noise and now the battery light has come on, so Im concluding that its finally had it. Do you know where I could get a good second hand one or a belt and is it worth me having a go at changing the belt first to see if that works? Thanks for your help.

i've got used alternators here £30 posted, could try belt first, its worth a go

any motor shop will sell you a drive belt, saves you postage! easy enough job to replace
