This may sound like a stupid question... I have searched and not found the answer i am looking for.
I have taxed my car online today and i was wondering if it is illegal to drive the car with no valid tax disk showing untill the new one gets posted?
Thanks

Your tax must have expired 2 weeks ago.
Why would you leave it so long before renewing it??

you will be fine mate because it will show up you've taxed it and plus you've got the ref number just carry that around with you in your car ...
Mine ran out 2 weeks ago and I haven't done it yet need to save the money ..
Does anyone know how long it is before DVLA send you a fine out if you haven't responded to the tax reminder ????

it is illegal to not display a valid tax disc at all times in the windscreen. it may appear on the police system but if they pull u and check they will hit u with a £200 fine. i believe it also says on the new tax disc wen u do get it.

its about 4-8 weeks, and they will send u a letter in the post with a £80 fine, or £40 if u pay within a certain time.

I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

There is a specific offence of failure to display a valid excise licence. You will show up on ANPR as being taxed so there may be no reason to stop you, but a physical stop will allow Traf_Pol to check your vehicle and they will see you are committing this offence.

Yawn, everyone on car forums are goody two shoes law experts now.
If its taxed on the database, you wont get fined or anything. Even if the police report you for the offence of not displaying a valid tax disc, DVLA wont send you a fine as you are already paid up.

You have 5 days from the expiry of your old tax disc.
If your vehicle is seen on public road after the 5 day grace period has ended and you are not displaying your new tax disc you will be reported for the offence of failing to display a valid ved and you will be fined.
This is a fact.

if you tax it online, then surley it would come up as taxed if police checked you?

This is incorrect.
Dvla will send you a fine if you are reported for a non display ved offence.
These fines are very difficult to contest as the original report will have come from either a dvla anpr operative/ dvla officer, police officer or traffic warden all of whom have no axe to grind to any individual vehicle and who's testimony holds considerable weight in court.
My other half works for the dvla and often attends court regarding these cases, extremely rarely is a case lost or fine waivered.
Anpr or any other database is nothing to do with anything, some of you on here need to check what your saying before spouting rubbish that could potentially get someone in trouble.

The offence is not wether the car is taxed or not.
It is failure to display a valid ved (vehicle excise duty), this is an offence.
