View Full Version : PS3 YLOD Fix

Only had my PS3 nearly 2 weeks and it has the yellow light of death, it was second hand though

Have bought a repair kit for £5 on eBay which comes with an easy to follow guide on repairing it

Anyone else repaired their YLOD themselves? My Dad's doing it tonight so if it works i'll post up the link to the kit i bought so if anyone else gets this they can fix it easily themselves for a fiver rather than paying like 80 quid for it to be fixed

mine had YLOD atm i havent bothered fixing it, i just bought an Xbox 360 instead

although i have contacted currys where i bought it from. they said they could send it to playstation and reimburse me for any costs to fix it :)

If it's still under warrenty then you're fine, but if it's out of warranty then this guide supplied with the bits needed to fix it seems to work

Saves paying £80 or whatever for Sony to fix

Yellow Light Of Death

I got a kit for a fiver and repaired it, was easy enough.. But only lasted not even 2 weeks and fucked up AGAIN!

So i've ordered some other stuff off eBay which is a tenner for just the materials, it's meant to be 99.9% silver, Arctic Silver or something it's called...and it is apparantly a better compound than what Sony even originally used...so i'm hoping it'll be a more permanent fix!

Found out this stuff from browsing PS3 forums, so it's been used before and is meant to be good stuff

LOL 3 hours, is YLOD linked to overheating of the PS3 then?

Peter_D

Yeah it's to do with overheating and it causes hairline fractures in the solder/flux or something

So it has to be reflowed.. It's quite easy to do, but i think the stuff in that kit i got was shite.. The new stuff i ordered is meant to be even better than what Sony used according to people on a PS3 forum, so hopefully itll last this time

^^^ Arctic Silver is a good name for thermal compound paste. Used a lot for Processors in high end PCs :y:

I fixed it using the arctic silver and it's running fine so far.. Bought a fan that clips onto the top of it and blows air into the vent on the top, and also have a fan sitting beside it blasting it with air so hopefully should stay cool!

to do that do you have to take the processor out?

How hard was that

Peter_D
11th August 2010, 20:14
It isn't hard at all, you basically have to dismantle EVERYTHING.. Everything comes off it, the hard drive, blu-ray drive, bluetooth thing, everything..

But i had a guide with step by step pics and description so was easy enough

Just time consuming waiting 20 mins about 3 different occassions for it to cool after heating bits of it with the heat gun to reflow it

Ditto.

The fan is much quiter than before!!!!

Peter_D

Nah didn't leave anything out when putting it back together...but found some missing screws so it had already been repaired when i bought it grrr

It has fucked up 3 times now since having it, so i'm going for a 250gb PS3 slim tomorrow

Dunno if mine was just a proper dud or what...but if you ^^ got a 3 month warranty then maybe the professionals are best to go to get it fixed, £37 aint bad at all

My PS3 had YLOD and sony swapped it for another repaired 60gb which had YLOD almost instantly so i had it replaced for a brand new 80gb. Not bad considering it was all free of charge

my cousin had the same issue with his 1st gen 60gb PS3. We fixed it about 3-4 times took ages pulling apart and back together. Lasted not that long tbh hence re-doing it. better off paying Sony to repair/ send replacement.

Lucky I've had my 40gb and no issues at all. just a lot of outer wear due to taking it round mates houses.

Well mine kept fucking up after under 2 weeks of each repair so just bought a new 250GB one

You'r probably better off buying a new one, that way if something goes wrong with it, it wont be for a long time. You play online?

Cost me £120 to get mine fix (Well by fix I mean they just gave me a new one lol) should have done it myself Xbox's are easy enough you just change the heat sinks i think not sure if PS3 would be the same

Peter_D

PS3 is more complicated and you have to totally dismantle it, as in remove everything from it basically! Not that hard though once you've done it once
