apart from the shorter gear ratios in 1st and 2nd are the 1.4 and vtr box's the same

No. Different gear ratio in everygear apart from 2nd. Not sure what the final drive is.
What you say is correct for the early mk1 VTR gearboxes.

on the sticky it shows they got the same ratios, mines a 1998 vtr

Ye thats the early ones. Might be somthing in the Articles section and there should be the ratios for the later VTR boxes with the sports clusters.

what year did they change do you know. Are they longer on the 1.4 compared to the newer r box

Not sure on the specfici dates.
Cant rmember off the top of my head, but i think the 1.4 box will be longer than the later vtr box. Check on the articles section on here if its still there, BobC done the guide with the newer vtr box etc

yes mate :y: though fittin 1.4 to a vtr box tend to leak oil a lil bit.

so 1.4 shafts leak when in an r box but r shafts work fine in 1.4 box.

My mates putta 4 speed gear box off a 1.0 in his furio haha, acceleration's mad on it

done now, found all sorts of goodies in the old gear oil and half the clutch friction material loose in loose in the bell housing. at least I know it will have solved the problem lol
