View Full Version : In two minds regarding jobs, what would you do..

In a job at Sainsburys at the moment, part time hours, they cut me from 38 hours to 16 hours a few months back, they now have put me back to 27 hours.. Put me on a course where I have the potential to be a manager at the other end of it :y: Takes a few years to be signed off, got to go through the motions, Bakery, Bakery Team Leader, Bakery Manager (3 years) and then could go to Duty managers then Store manager. (6-7 years :( ) £7.48 an hour 5 days a week if I go back to full time
Been offered a job, a well known water company in my area, 38 hours a week, 4 days a week, starting wage of £18k a year, working myself up to 24k a year in 3 years after training. Own company van and health care included. Didn't expect to be offered it as it all started out in a drunken conversation with my cousin's Dad, tonight he come round and offered me it.
My problem is I feel like I owe my dept. manager at Sainsburys something because he pushed me to go onto this course. But then again he knows I have been wanting out ever since he sacked my mate last week for something she didn't do! & he knew it.
What option should I take?
How should I go about letting one or the other people down?
Im really confused atm..

loyalty shouldn't come into it Dom, look after number 1 and thats you! whats the long term prospects of both jobs is another thing to weigh up as well. I felt like crap handing my notice in 3 weeks after finishing my apprenticeship but if i'd have stayed with the firm i'd always have been seen as the apprentice however long i was there.

Exactly.. You think people give two shits about loyalty? Everyone's out for themselves.. If it was the other way around - Would your manager, or anyone else in your store sacrifice their happiness or job prospects due to loyalty? - Madness.

Sainsburys don't know about loyalty.
You didn't owe them anything from the start, but even less so when they cut your hours.
Do it. You'll regret it if you don't.

Also Sainsburys stitched my mate up good and proper, he was a bakery manager with them and when he got signed off sick with work related stress on his return his life was made hell, ended up at an industrial tribunal for constructive dismissal, how much loyalty did they show him for his services?

The sainsbury's job would only be good if you want to be a manager otherwise no offence but supermarket jobs are for thoes with no qualifications. Go with the water company job and aim to climb the ladder

I suppose so, I just felt like he put up with me and my lateness, literally 30mins late for most shifts and he looked past this and made me stay at the job :n:

Just like I would be, all the guys in the Bakery are 24+, I would always look upto them, if I was the team leader in there they would probably carry on as normal, and it would always come back to me if anything went wrong..
Exactly.. You think people give two shits about loyalty? Everyone's out for themselves.. If it was the other way around - Would your manager, or anyone else in your store sacrifice their happiness or job prospects due to loyalty? - Madness.
No they wouldn't mate, they kind of look after themselves and fuck on the rest of us.
Also Sainsburys stitched my mate up good and proper, he was a bakery manager with them and when he got signed off sick with work related stress on his return his life was made hell, ended up at an industrial tribunal for constructive dismissal, how much loyalty did they show him for his services?
If I was him, I would have burned that store down. No joke.

My Bakery manager atm has NO GCSE's, didnt turn up for any exams at school, he now drives around in a 10 Plate VW Scirocco (sp?).. The prospects have made me stay there.

This didn't even cross my mind, very good point :y:

Store managers are hated yes! a Team leader is not hated in my store, they get shit pay for what they do and the pressure on them, most of them drop out and go to Tesco though.
and if you jack Sainsburys in remember to have a turd in the bakery oven and nick me some cookies
Point taken, but I like the cookies, may put extra Mayo/Cream in the Chocolate Eclairs ')

Its a no brainer mate, Tell sainsburys were to go. I cannot stand the bastards since I got sacked because of my 2 faced fat wank of a manager! They only care about them selves and will put shit onto anybody to cover their own backs.
You have a great opportunity here mate and it sounds like something thats hard to come by. Go for the water job you will regret passing up on it if you stick at sainsburys.
Just tell you're manager in sainsburys you have been offered a job that is just to good to pass up and no matter what they offer you it will not meet the standards of the job you have been offered.

At the end of the day, in order to get a better job, the vacancy needs to be there. Who's to say that the job opportunity will even come up? Someone with no qualifications that has ended up in a cushty job isn't likely to leave it, so chances are, you have no chance of getting his job, unless you leapfrog him. I reckon you are better off with the other job.

super markets are always recruiting so you can always get a job in one but a water company might only recruit once a year so take the chance while its their. Think of the prospects available to you in the water company i know someone who works for northumbrian water and he loves it, gets mint pay and has progressed loads since he started
23carragold
12th August 2010, 21:03
Dom if I were you I would take the water company. They are selective about who they recruit, as with supermarkets it's not as progressive as it can make out to be.
As Bound said really, this is your future. Loyalty counts for very little in supermarkets, people there are 10 a penny. People who are at the top are there for a reason, they are ruthless in how they operate. I've rarely seen soft people in those positions.
In the water company I'm sure you will feel more professional as there is less informality and bitching than compared to the relaxed atmospheres of supermarkets bud.
Good luck with it I hope you choose well.

Go with the water company job. If you find you don't like it you can always go back to sainsburys or another supermarket. Don't feel guilty about leaving sainsburys. As said there is no guarantee that you'll be able to become a team leader or manager, whereas from what you've said I get the idea there is with the water company. Go for it Dom :y:

Completely agree with you there fella!!
You really do have to, its about looking after number one. Not number 2,3,4 and so on.
You don't owe them shit. You work for the company, earning your money the only way you can from them. Take the other job, seriously. £18k a year starting wage is more than what i earn!!! I'm on minimum wage and 27. I am fucking embarassed to be earning my measley £10k a year. Been looking for other, better paid jobs for a few years now and have only just recently heard from 1 company I came across 4 months ago!
Remember.......look out for number 1 when it comes to work. Number 2,3,4 and the rest are not important if you see number 1 as yourself (and partner, if you have) and family. Thats it..........

My advice take the job. Sainsburys will still be there if it doesnt work out. You might not be able to go back to that particular store but someone like Tesco will jump at a person with your experience and like said before you'll regret it if you don't do it.
With regard to you current manager. Tell him what you've told us, and if nothing else hell respect your honesty for telling him anyway.

Don't stick with the current job because of loyalty as the company won't be loyal to anything but their bottom line. Stay with it if you enjoy the job. As you know I've just turned down a better paid job so that I enjoyed the work, had better hours and better options.

I know what you mean, im just a little pawn in there game at the moment, the only reason they are trying to keep me is because they have just spent £1k on me putting me on some course.
I don't enjoy Sainsburys anymore, they sacked my mate for something she didn't do, abusing a Discount Card.. How pathetic is that?!
Working hours wise, I want my weekends back. Fri-Sat-Sunday are my contracted days, Monday and Tuesday are overtime days :n: So I can only go out when I have holiday :(

Supermarkets are only good for making money, as a career it's very unrewarding. The money which can be earnt if your willing to sacrifice things is good tho... I'm on more than all my friends who are professionals/tradesmen- but I'm also planning on leaving after 3 years of senior management as it's soul destroying!
Go for the trade mate, you won't regret it

As a colleague it's not that badly paid tbf, depends on what you do whether or not the moneys worth it.. The hours and inconvenience to my life is what I put up with while managing various departments then moving onto doing refurbishments and new builds, the money made it worthwhile for a period- and moving around stores is good to as the salary increases each time but even that's not enough now!
Sainsburys will be no different to where I work :). Except most supermarkets cap new managers salaries , doh.
