In some European countries, they fine you to a direct ratio of what you earn.

You need to give them this link:
http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/12082010/36/swedish-driver-gets-pound-650-000-speeding-fine-0.html

So obvious the Swedish Police are taking advantage of the fact the guy obviously has plenty of money and are making an example of him.

Classic excuse. Dodgy speedo officer. I had no idea I was travelling at more than double the speed limit ;)

Not sure I agree with people on higher incomes paying a bigger fine because they earn more.

"The driver, who has not been named, claimed that the car had recently been fitted with a new speedometer, which was faulty."

Nice try ;)

imo its a good idea yes its almost like penalising (sp?) people for having money but a £60 fine to someone like that wouldnt even be noticed thus not realy being any punishment

I disagree.

I think its a really good idea and more things should be based on income

good and bad

bad side is people who dont have a job and no income will get away with paying nothing :n:

I don't think the fine is designed to put anyone in financial hardship. The reason I don't speed is because of the points system. £60 is fuck all and I bet whatever this guy was fined was also naff all to him.

I disagree.

So you agree with penalising people who have studied hard, worked hard and now earn a decent living?

Fair enough if you do, you're entitled to your view.

Not necessarily. Say people who earn £16k and under are in one "threshold" and get charged the base rate, then above that its done on what you earn....

I don't think he's capable of coherent thoughts. He cheated on Cheryl. :homme:

Whilst I think rich people aren't dissuaded by a mere £60 fine, its the thought of chavs getting off scott free as they don't earn.

If there were set parameters i.e. an upper and lower limit. Like tax bands or something.

''so why have you pulled me over?''
''I think you know why! Speeding''
''No, really! I think my speedo is faulty you know..''

Its all relative though isn't it. Just because you have studied and worked hard, doesn't make you any better a human being than the next unemployed person.

Its all relative. Charging someone who earns £100 a £10 fine is the same as charging someone who earns £1000 a £100 fine. Plus with things like fines tax's and all that shiz it all goes towards the government etc and would really help the economy and what not.

I hope you don't think im saying all of this cus i earn a tuppence. I'm at uni studying to be an accountant, so, hopefully i should be earning a decent wage, and if i should ever get penalised i would be happy to pay a fine based on my income because as i said, its all relative.

I remember when George McCartney got done for speeding at 97mph on the A19 in his Hummer H2, how he managed 97mph in a Hummer I will never understand.

Dwight Yorke got banned speeding on the A19 as did Anthony Stokes lol!

I know exactly where you're coming from but the more the government decides to tax the rich, the more rich and talented people either move abroad to work or look to exploit potential tax loop-holes - either way the government loses out and so does business.

Also, where do you draw the line? If you earn 10 times what I do then should you pay 10 times what I do for a loaf of bread? What about to have your bin emptied weekly? Fancy paying 10 times what I do in council tax? It sounds daft to say but it's the same principle.

Things like bread etc that the money doesn't go toward the goverment directly etc shouldn't be income based. Because then its the company who is getting more money and not really boosting our economy. If everything in the world was based on income, then money would become obsolete.

Just things like tax's, nhs, fines etc

loads of footballers get done

based on wages would be ideal

Indirectly it does because firms pay corporation tax on their profits.

If you're interested, there's a link below about income tax and how raising taxes doesn't necessarily work:

.

Actually agree with you there. This is the reason that I'm so careful not to speed..points look awful on a licence especially in certain career's and I'd rather not bear the financial burden that can be a by-product of them. The initial fine is nothing tbh.

Why though?

Does a fine of £60 worry you? It doesn't me. I piss that and then some straight up the wall on a Saturday night.

So how is a pro-rata fine going to bother a footballer, whatever he earns?

A million and one things indirectly affect tax, but imo just basic tax's, fines nhs and such should be income based.

Very good read tho, had to do an essay on a similar piece in the previous budget.

If a footballer was hit hard, he would give a second thought to speeding the next time as he wouldn't want the financial burden.

I admit £60 isn't a great deal, but the financial burden to the average joe is the consequences that the points have..increased insurance premiums and possible job losses for some.

I would reckon that a larger fine would be more appropriate than points in some cases, they do it in alot of other countries, drivers just get fines instead of points/bans

When i got 3 points and a 60 quid fine for a bald tyre which was due to my tracking being out, the tyres werent even old, the other 3 were fine.. I went to pay the fine with a bag of shrapnel, 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p.. Even had a bit of paper with the exact amount of each different coin. Stood there sniggering away to myself as i handed over a carrier bag of pissy change, but they refused it and i had to go and get it changed into notes at the post office

i think it should be relative, with a minimum fine in place,

bread milk etc has nothing to do with it because the fine is a punishment so therefore meant to make the person worse off, £60 to someone making £10k a year is alot more than someone making £100,000k a year.
