Hey :), i have decided to join the army and to be honest i think they have given me the application forms a bit quickly even though that is what i want is to get in quick i feel i havent been given full directions if u know what i mean. I was looking at three jobs - Dog Handler, Intelligence OPMI, and Welsh Gaurds infantry. My sister and lots of other people have said steer clear of infantry but im attracted to the lifestlye, adventure and commardery (im sorry i cant spell it) even though i know theres a very good chance of afghan and injury, but i know lots of other jobs like the OPMI are pretty front line and everything is dangerous these days so why not. Could anyone in the army now or very recently give me some insight into jobs they need quickly and whats the job of a royal signal operator and a royal engineers EOD. Although i am this second searching i find a second/personal experience better. Thanks :)

I dunno, I never see the point in joining the Armed forces if your not actually going to be doing the fighting.. As ignorant as it sounds, maybe its just being a plain old bootneck talking

IIRC EOD is bomb disposial (sp?) My mates in the royal engineers.
Also no matter what job you take everybody has to do at least one tour in afgan iirc ;)
Even bricklayers have to do some front line action everyone can shoot a gun in the army :)
(thats one of the things they dont tell you till your in their haha)

Why is the waiting list so long for army? For the marines it took me 4 months from handing in application, passing psychometric test, passing eye test, passing medical, passing pre joining fitness test, passing interview, passing PRMC to entry..

No idea mate, I know RM/Navy applications are closed down here aswell. Everyone can't get work so they are applying for the armed forces. Making it 10 times harder for legitimate people who have always wanted to join.

That was my plan join the army buy a teg and then leave after 4 years lol. I didnt realise so many people were trying to sign up tho thought you could sign up and be in basic training straight away?

All you have is application forms, you can just walk in and get them lol
Its the process after that will take there time
I waited 3 months to get in Navy, due to someone else dropping out mind, but alot of my mates waited anything from a year to two years.
Depends what jobs you want to do, normally better job longer waiting list.

i would of thought that pay is the same all over the board and pay would be down to time served and rank. Navy is that way. Obviously you may get additional pay for different things, I get extra pay for when im at sea, subs get submarine pay, get flight pay and all different bits and bobs

dude youve got no chance of getting dog handler theres only 5/6 spaces a year, i work with a recruiting team at the mo so get access to all job vacancies ect ect,
if you want the proper lifestyle imo you need to join a proper regiment (infantry, royal armoured corps) where you'll spend your career with the same unit and its like a big family, whereas if you join RE or REME you'll change units every couple of years.
regarding waiting times, when i joined back in 05 it took 8 weeks from walking in the careers office to being in basic training, but now the army is 98% fully manned so they can be pick and choose who they want.
