Dont you find all this stuff amazing, how much damage it does from such a small amount.
Wierd to think that in Area 51 theres them model towns and they use nuclear bombs on them, abit like what you see in them films.
Chernobyla 1000square mile zone effected by the chernobyl power plant disaster, like a proper ghost area.

Nuclear power already contributes 20% of the power for england. Not sure what the power plant name is, but there on on the West Coast deposits its waste into the sea towards the Isle of Man, the high amount of Cancer on the island is suposidly down to the waste from the nuclear power plant.

Couldnt agree more.
So many myths surrounding nuclear power. Only down side is storing waste, because of radioactive uraniums half life.
Having worked at Sizewell B and Sellafield, i think its very good. People are just scared as they dont know the science of it.
Chernobyl was a freak disaster as the reactor just wasnt built right lol.

I also agree. I've worked at Capenhurst Nuclear Reprocessing Plant. No problems with the stuff. I was even there for a full on spillage drill (didn't know it was a drill at the time) everything works so well and the stuff they use is all as safe as it can be. I hope we get more plants that use nuclear, it's dead good. :)

What would happen if a nuclear plant were to be the target of a bomb/attack?
PSPDan
18th August 2010, 12:33
Tsar Bomba - biggest bomb ever tested. Originally 100megatons but reduced to about 50 (equivalent to 57,000,000 tons of TNT).

We would die from the fallout lol. No debate about that haha.
But the fuel/spent waste is so carefully stored when prior to use and after use it *may* not get out at all. I.e vitrification and welded into a sealed container for e.g slurry but it probs wont survive a massive blast.

Not a lot mate. the plants are that well protected that you can't get near them. Most have No-Fly zones around them since 9-11. The perrimiter fences are all allarmed so anyone trying to scale them will be apprehended asap and last but not least. ALL nuclear sites of any size that could cause a problem if bombed have their own police force. The Civil Nuclear Police Force, and believe me, these guys are good.... AND ARMED TO THE TEETH!!!!!
So in short mate, a terrorist attack on a Nuclear facility is nigh on impossible! End of!

I dont think it was a flight path or a fly zone into the twin towers or the pentagon mate. If terrorists had their own plane, i doubt theyd care about a no flight zone n take a divertion, theyd go straight into it. The plane wouldnt be able to get shot down in case it lands on the Power Plant either.

No i know, but the fighter jets based near sellafield would be there in time to shoot them down plus the reactors are encased in so much concrete that you'd need to fly a bloody big plane full of fuel in to it to make a dent.

Most of it would be from weathering from the elements and everyone just abandoned it, they would've left doors and windows open which have been left that way for about 24 years.
Chernobyl/Pripyat isn't that that destroyed really, it looks as though people could've been living there the day before in some of the areas.

Ever watched the final episode of Ultimate Force ;) haha
Haha Good call! Quality series, the first line of defence. i.e the Police at these stations are also the weakest as they are human.
The armored 'nuclear waste carrier' in that is epic.... shame its a decoy :homme:

I find Chernobyl and Pripyat fascinating, I will visit there someday. I think the COD level really captures the eeriness of the whole place too.
I live pretty much next to Hunterston power station in Scotland so I'm fucked if that goes lol.

when i worked with the RDA (riding for the disabled) we had some of the children who were victims of Chernobyl come over once a year on their visit to Scotland.
they would get to see the castle and go swimming etc, and then they would come up to the horses and go for carriage rides and horse ride themselves.
might seem like every day things to us but bear in mind some of these kids are deformed /; disabled because of this, and dont have the funding / lifetyle / facilities back home to do stuff like that.
was pretty hard to see at times to be honest.

I have been fascinated by this all day! I have wasted about 7 Working hours reading up on it today. I just find it amazing that it really is like time stood still there and its been over 20 years and its still dangerous to life. Apparently there was a film crew allowed into the control room once... I bet there wasnt many volunteers for that one.

Haha I think the last episode was the best one. Love the last line that Henno says, 'I've defused the bomb, now go get me spider man'.

There's a lot of stuff on 28dayslater about it, from people who have gone on tours to Pripyat.
Remember reading a lot about it a bit back, and it actually scared me. When it goes into details about how the residents were stood on the bridge, watching the coloured sparks flying from the reactor, thinking it was some kind of show, while actually being hit with radiation, it kind of presents a pretty graphic image. And someone goes onto explain that being hit with radiation gives a sensation of pins and needles.
Can't find it, but it's a very big write up on it, with loads of pics, that definately give you a good insight into the disaster.
This is a good read/view too: http://englishrussia.com/index.php/2006/09/13/lost-city-of-chernobyl/

Radiation is really painful. Your skin blisters, you're constantly sick, you get disorientated, and you're blood pressure drops rapidly. It's horrible!

Thats a pic of the deliberate mass radiation poisoning of nearly all Sephardi youths of a generation in Israel as part of an atomic experiement.
Every Sephardi child was to be given 35,000 times the maximum dose of x-rays through his head. For doing so, the American government paid the Israeli government 300 million Israeli liras a year. The entire Health budget was 60 million liras. The money paid by the Americans is equivalent to billions of dollars today.

Yes, been there a few times, quite spooky at night and there is a room there that has a single light on like a dull lamp, scary...
You should gather up a few friends and go one night, park in Dechmont and walk up the backpath though as a security gaurd sits away down at the gate
