Hello

My MOT is due in 3 months and im sure it is going to fail.

If I get an MOT done now and it fails, will I still be covered for the 3 months remaining or does a fail prevent me driving it?

Basically, I want to know what it fails on and get the work done myself over the next 3 months :)

Cheers

If you fail an MOT, you've failed an MOT. Unless it goes down unrecorded, you will have to get the car fixed before driving it again...

I think you can only have an mot 1 month before the actual date, not 100% sure on that though, why not just go over the entire car and find out what you think will fail.

You can MOT a car at any time IIRC.

can you not get one of thoses pre MOT checks? If it fails you know what needs doing without it failing then and if it Passes then wack it through an MOT

I thought you could have it done at any time but kwik fit site says You can have your vehicle MoT tested up to 28 days in advance of its due date

Sorry if you get it done earlier than a month before it's due it will only run 12 months. If you get it within the month before it's due then it will run until the certificate expires.

i.e.

If the test is due September 4th, and you get it done August 5th, it will be valid until September 4th 2011. However, if you get it done August 3rd it will only run until August 3rd 2011.

You cant have it done before, apart from 1 month before, which effectively gives you 13 months mot, because the new certificate, gets dated to start when the old one runs out.. Unless you want to cancel out the old certificate..

Just get a pre MOT check done on it by a garage, then you know what needs doing, without an MOT failure going on the database, as people buying cars can now check on the database what it failed on, and when it was retested

You can have it tested at any time.
But id it fails it fails and you have to get it sortd.
The cönfusion is over the month b4 rule, if u mot upto 1 month prior to its due date and pass the cert will be issued to run from the date your old test would run out.
So in effect you get a 13month mot pass.

you can get it mot now and if it fails your current mot is still valid as said to get the credit for 13 month mot you can do it 28 day before it runs out so even if it fail you will still have 28 day of your mot left

If a car fails its MOT then it is unroadworthy and cannot be used on the road. That was my understanding anyway... *goes to do a little research*.

wrong wrong wrong
now that the car has to be clockd in to the computer to do an mot if it fails it over writes any remaining test on the car

You can MOT the car whenever you want, but if it fails its MOT, you HAVE to get it fixed and re-tested before you drive it on the road again.

If you take your MOT before 1 month of it's due date and it fails, you have no MOT. Within one month of the due date, you can take it for MOT, if it fails TECHNICALLY you've still got an MOT and on the system you still will etc. This is what I did recently, I took it 10 days before it ran out so I had time to get it all sorted and still be able to drive it!

IF you were pulled by the police and they found it had failed on something considerably dangerous, I imagine they'd arse rape you for continuing to drive it daily.. But technically you've still got an MOT.

you can only MOT it upto 1 month before the date its due. You cant do 3 months prior. As said above best thing to do is to pre-mot check and get the things fixed. Then in 2 months time whack it through the MOT.

From a little research i have found there are mixed opinions on this and even alot of the MOT testers aren't 100% sure. Seems like a bit of a grey area.

However this is what i've gathered from my research so far,

If you have a month left on your original MOT then the car fails an MOT test, then the previous MOT certificate is still valid. However, regardless of if a car has MOT or not, it is illegal to drive a car on the road which isn't unroadworthy. Also i'm sure if you search the small print on your terms and conditions of your insurance i'm pretty sure they will mention your policy not being valid if the car is not roadworthy whilst being driven on the roads.
