Query for the photoshoppers

Im looking to turn a pic into an image which can be used to print a tshirt from. The idea Ive got is to (theres a word for it but I cant remember) "thingy" the pic, so it looks like a stencil or greyscale image, the kind of thing that you could use to print a white image on a black tshirt for example.

Anyone know what I mean lol and how to do it?

Its a filter i think mate. Can change the effects
