31st August 2010, 13:31
dampers would be under £200
exhaust seal will be £5 max
rear brake pads you can buy for around £20
so thats alot of labour
could all be done in about 3 hours tops
readie
31st August 2010, 13:39
cheaper that that (shocks all around are £120 from euro car parts)
brake pads are £12 from ECP
and exhaust seal is like 2 quid
could do the rear shocks yourself (even if you are not mechanically minded its only 2 bolts a side) pads are really easy and exhaust seal is just unbolt the section and just put the paste on
then all you need at max is the front shocks fitting

Ordered the APEX kit and rear brake pads from Kam. Hopefully be here tommorow.

Euro Parts are £120 for 4 dampers, but being in trade get discount my self.
If ur mechanicaly minded do it all your self, if your stuck for cash, scrap yards might be worth a hour of your time.. But i recomend new

I took mine in for its MOT this morning (expires next Monday) and it passed with the 1 advisory. Not bad for a 9 year old car on approx. 92k miles :)

Last time i looked at it, it needed shocks, springs, and a wheel cylinder.
It passed... And feel free to come see if the work has been done, which it was that evening.
Iknow what needs checking and what condition it has to be in, the ministry could stop me any time and wont find bugger all with it.
Your right he would have to be a tit to drive, knowingly his car is fucked!

Do you know anyone who is mechanically minded, and can do it at 'mates rates' for you?
Pieface
31st August 2010, 21:21
Nope, no-one at all.

Looks like you have two choices mate, have it done for £500 odd quid or get help using a Saxo Haynes manual :P

If you want to pay me a few quid and learn a bit at the same time, you could get the bits and bring it here. I have all the tools etc and a big kettle for the brewing up. :)
Theres even a europarts not far from here :)

I have driven my car after failed MOTs, don't you get 10 days to fix it?
Pieface
31st August 2010, 22:02
You get 10 days to be allowed a retest, but you can only drive directly to the MOT station.

You get 10 days to be allowed a retest, but you can only drive directly to the MOT station.
But aren't you allowed to take it from an MOT station to a place where it will be fixed withing 10 days?
Pieface
31st August 2010, 22:16
Within a reasonable distance according to the MOT website. But they can still catch you and get you.

Can't you say it is being taken somewhere to be fixed, i.e. if you get a confirmation from someone that they are willing to fix it?
Pieface
31st August 2010, 22:18
You can, but it's still up to a coppers discretion. It's a very grey area regarding MOTs.

Are you sure you can't get a better price elsewhere? Looks like you are going to have to pay the 500 odd mark otherwise

£500 was including parts. I've got better parts myself so it's just the labour costs I need now. I don't know anywhere else around which would be cheaper really. This place is charging £40 an hour labour, although I'm going to speak with them as they've got 45 minutes per rear shock absorber to change, and 45 minutes to change the rear brake pads.

Brake pads and rear shocks are a piece of piss, you could do them yourself I'm sure mate.
If not - Good luck bud.

31st August 2010, 22:46
45 mins to do the rear brakes???
That is such an easy job you should do it yourself. if you arent mechanically minded ask someone you know local if they would come do it for you cheap.
Mine failed on saturday, retest on friday, just need to change my wheel bearings and I am good to go :)
Pieface
31st August 2010, 22:51
Yeah, I might give it a go myself to do it. I'm not doing the Front struts though.
Reechard
31st August 2010, 22:55
Rear should be easy, was going to offer you my suspension for you to use, got 2 sets spare.
Pieface
31st August 2010, 22:56
Ordered a brand new APEX system, as I have no clue what the front struts were and the rear were GMAX or something and looked battered. Apparently APEX were good value so went for it.
I just need to go to halfrauds tomorrow and get a Jack and some axle stands to do the job.
Reechard
31st August 2010, 22:59
You can get a box from Halfords that has 2 tonne jack, stands, chocks and a creeper.
Think its about £50 which is about £10 more than buying the stands and jack on their own.
