Just had someone to view my car as i am selling it and wanting a VTR. Its a P reg Fiat Punto. Her friend looked about and in the radiator pipe (i think, fecking useless with cars) there was a load of like white gunk and he said do you know it looks like your head gaskets gone? I had no clue, and it was just MOT'd last month, and he said nothing to me about it. I was like eh ya joking? But he said usually if the head gasket has gone then after the engines been running for a few seconds it cuts out, but it doesnt, it runs for ever while idle and drives perfectly fine etc. I said i'd ask my dad when he finishes work as hes good with cars and i'll see if we can do anything or if it could possibly be anything else and i'll be in touch with them. Could it possibly be anything or nothing with the white, like snot in the pipe? I only had it MOT'd last month. Thanks

Do you do alot of short trips?...could just be a build up of condensation, dont always ju p to conclusions the HG is fucked!
Get a compression test, few quids tbh!

Take the oil and water caps off and take a photo. The Punto engines are a bit wank and do tend to go. Odds are its just a bit of moisture if it still runs fine and does not over heat or have any warning lights I would not worry. Any buyer take the responsibility to inspect the car and make there own opinion.

what sort of trips do you do??
is there any residue under the oil filler cap??

and checking the hg isnt part of the mot

there you go then
the condensation in the engine wont be getting chance to burn off, so instead it mixes with the oil and forms the gunk

take the car on a good run, get it right up to tempreture, should see that this clears things up

well i thought myself surely the hhead gasket cant have gone. Ive just taken a picture of oil and radiator pipe. You can see a bit of gunk in the radiator pipe but the oil looks fine, and i dipped it, and no gunk or anything came out, surely it would? No theres no residue on the oil cap or anything. All looks fine to me and the car runs perfectly fine. Just that gunk in the radiator cap. Heres the pics, what you think

WELL GET UP EARLIER THEN

in the 2nd pic there is residue around the neck
easiest thing to do is take it for a good run, 70 or 80 miles to make sure its good and warm, alot of it should burn off

get a compression test done, ask in beeston motospares they will know some one who does them (just stay away from winstons)

if the compression is good, get the oil and water changed and flushed through

TheVtrKid
1st September 2010, 18:50
its not called winstons anymore, its churchills lol :p

Well i know a few people who are mechanics and so does my boss, so i'll have a word around. Is it possible the head gaskets going? Cheers for your help

swampy
1st September 2010, 18:53
it is possible but id say more likely due to the short journeys

1st September 2010, 18:54

TheVtrKid
1st September 2010, 18:57
cant see any oil in the water though, its just gunk? As far as i know anyway. I'll try the compression check though, and take it from there. Thanks for your help.

KINGVTS
1st September 2010, 19:08
mot has nothing to do with this sort of thing really

hopefully for you its just a build up due to short trips take it for a good long run and hopefully it should go away

failing that give it a clean up before a viewer comes!

Well surely it would have been on an advisory or he'd mentioned it to me or something? Ye ill give it a good run, probly the weekend ill get chance now. It was a last minute thing, finished work at 6, and they were here by half 6, so that couldnt have been helped really. Wouldnt i surely see any symptoms though if HG was going? As mentioned.....engine cutting out, residue round oil cap etc?

P398UGD

id say £300 mate and that suply with all the new parts :)
il tell you an easyer way mate and save your money if u want to do it ur self its easy...

disconect all piping and switches.
time it up
undo the inlet manifold and then the exhaust manifold

take the head of gett it skimmed cost £20-25 then refit urself the same way as u took it all of thats how you learn mate easy..

start in the morning so u got time to get the head skimmed
it takes 3 hours to take it of then put it back on job done :)

would cost you about £25 for head gasket
so you do it urself ye save about £200+

Ive seen more gunk undeer my foreskin after a messy night in amsterdam!
Hardgly hg worthy.

As said a compression test, any garage would have one or buy your own for about 10 quid on ebay.

The gunk, is water being mixed with oil... Hg splits and it mixes, or condensation not being burnt off, will mix with the oil...

Cara19
1st September 2010, 19:38
haha i wont be doing it myself
so i could of changed my ka head gasket for 12 quid? i sold it to a garage and they gave me 50 for the car booooo i thought the head gasket was really serious

Buy a haynes manual and follow it to the letter.
I changed my HG in the saxo, quite easy but easy to fuck your engine if not done right.
Read the manual and the re-read it and then read it again.
Oh and take your time dont rush thats when you miss things.
HG don't always have to be skimmed btw.

P398UGD
1st September 2010, 19:44
that is completly true

most cases if the engine has been cooked then the head will be warped lol hi vex mate

lol very nice mate. so that doesnt really look like head gaskets gone? As said before, i have no idea, i wouldn't even noticed it if the guy hadn't mentioned it.

Hi buddy:hug:

Yea like he said it'll warp over time and stress on the engine.
I heard water gushing about behind the dash and checked the oil straight away and mayo on the cap.

But I say try it, if you have instuctions that you stick to you'll be fine

No they wouldnt mark it on any sheet at an mot.
How could they tell?
They dont remove any öf the engine caps when doing an mot
id say its just condensation.
A good run out should sort it.
