what about £1800 plus the value of the saxo? ;)

or is that included in the £1800, if not then part ex towards it as normally people are looking to get a smaller car :)

edit... just noticed you have a vts :homme:

Personally, I'd get a phase 1.

Quicker and look more agressive.

Not saying loans are bad, and 0% interest is very good, just prefer to buy stuff outright

I've always been a fan of the Ph1 172. Chris had his looking very good.
After the issue he had with his has put me off.

Most PH1's run well.

They tend to break when the owners hammer them, this is what happened in Chris's case.

1 bad car does not make the rest crap!

Russ_16v

There is nothing that breaks on a ph1 that doesnt on a ph2 - its all in how they are treated, they are the same car underneath.

The ph1's are known to be a bit faster, as (bar the 172cup) they are lighter, plus ph1 engines have mechanical throttle and the exhaust ports are 30% larger.

The lightest is the 172 cup, due to lack of sound proofing, no abs, glass from the base spec Clio (not tinted and heat resistant) also no air con and basic interior.

The 172 Cup is circa 1011kg, the ph1 1030kg's and the ph2 172/182 1100 kgs.

It all depends if you want a newer looking car. The ph1 is cheaper but looks older (though I prefere the ph1 look) and the ph2 looks much newer.

£1500-£2000 will get you a goof ph1, £2700+ will be a good ph2.

Or buy my itb'd ph1 :D £3000 ono

Cat, is that rust on the bulkhead? I've been looking at 172's a lot lately but keep seeing that in the background. Is it rust or just my eye's playing tricks? :)

oh no lol, thats the fire wall material stuff, the previous owner got a bit happy with a power washer lol And it's probably filthy as well.

I am assuming you mean the bit behind the coil pack!

Yea pal. That's what i meant :) Just wanted to check as i'm beginning to think i want to move on from the Saxo. Is there anything common fault wise i should look out for?
I know the rust on back arches but engine wise i've only owned a 1.6 RXE in the past (and a 1.4rt mk1) but with the mk2 the coilpack's and crank sensor were suspect. Just unsure with the 2ltr.

common problems as far as I know are engine mounts need replacing now and again, standard exhausts rust away, standard suspension goes now and again like.

Also watch out for the timing belt, can be expensive. And screwed up easily. And clutch aint the strongest standard either, if you like to do billy burn outs in a mc rags car park to impress the local dole monkeys it would be best to get an up rated clutch or another car lol. Think thats it like.

Bar those things, just the usual stuff you look for on cars really.

Cheers pal :) I'm thinking if i get one i might just do the cambelt myself anyway. Just for piece of mind. My dad's a mechanic and auto electrician anyway, so there's a helping hand right there ;) haha.

Cheers for the advice though. Fancied one for years, might have to make it happen in the next few month.

They are great cars mate, coming from a car like a saxo you wouldn't be dissappointed, although more expensive to maintain due to not being as common as shit. Oh and if you do the timing belt yourself, get the official timing belt tools, the laser/cheaper ones bends apparently.

And insurance aint great although I did change insurance half way through so they ream you.

Ph1 is the best to get, ph2 if you like the less aggressive look though, Ph1 for men :D

I think the Ph1 172 is similar to the Mk1 Saxo. It looks more aggresive, but a little dated. I had a Mk1 Saxo but had 4 Mk2 Saxo's and prefer the Mk2 over the Mk1 so I prefer the Ph2 172's over the Ph1's.
