Hii,
basically my mk2 VTR has done 127k, with no record of head gasket being done. :panic: so i want to do it. i have a reasonable knwledge of mechanics and have a good idea on what im doing. changing a head gasket is it just a case of taking the head of replacing the gasket and whacking the head back on?

or is there more to it than that.. help much appreciated.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

dan.

best to leave the head factory, skim it if it only needs it e.g. pitted etc. however if you take it to the place. they'll be able to test it etc and see if it needs doing

its not a simple head on head off job, its gotta be done properly i.e. correct torques settings and bolt orders otherwise its only gonna go within a few hours (happened to me first time lol)

i just want to do it so i knw its been done. how do you lock the engine on TDC? and if i find out thhe torx seting for the head etc and the order they are tightened up shorely i can do it myself?
why would i need to get the head re-skimmed if the gasket hasnt actually gone? thought you only needed to do it when the H.Gasket actually goe's? correct me if im wrong.

thanks for the help guys/girls :)

get a haynes manual from halfrauds and it will be explained all in there, all the setting how to do it etc. so yes to your answer you can, i have rebuilt heads and changed engines with help from them so all you need is haynes :) and sometimes help from peeps on here:y:which are very helpful;)

To lock the engine at TDC you put a bolt through 1 of the holes in the camshaft pulley(when you`ve found tdc):y:

If its got to that milage it will have been done already. Don't make work for yourself old mate if I were you.

If you must do it you will need gasket kit, head bolts, head skimming, antifreeze, oil and oil filter and cam belt ideally.

I did mine last year for £100.00 - I got a service kit, gasket kit and bolts and cam belt off ebay and use d a local machine shop for the skim (£35.00).

hi guys, after reading all this, im just going to leave it. i spoke to my dad who was a mechanic most his life, and he said like someone else did, with that kind of mileage it must of been done. i took my cam belt covers off today and the belt looks almost new.

thanks for the help anyway though people. :)

i never said that just because the belt looks new, the head gasket will be done did i? :)

Maybe the lad wants to do it himself?
Not everybody likes to have all things done for them, some people like to learn and do things for themselves :y:
