Them Astras CAN look ok but mostly look awful.
172 gets my vote :)

Astra obviously lol
Will need a few quid to make them handle good, whiteline do a few options for them

The reason i can't decide is basically because of handling, i'd love a turbo hence the Astra, but i want a good handling car so that's why i'm thinking the 172 lol
I'm swaying more towards the Astra, but i think i would be best test driving both to decide on the overall car.
Anyone on here ever owned/driven both?

Well powerwise the clio is only 17bhp less and don't forget it's lighter and handles better. Ok there is more potential with the Turbo engine but in standard form then i would still rather have the Clio.

Yea i see where your coming from, it's a tough one as i personally love the look of the Astra's, but like you say the Clio is lighter and handles better, but then again the Astra is probably better built! Arghhh :p

They are capable if you set them up right but liking them depends on your driving style

If you're a typical Saxo driver don't get one if not then get one lol

this! theyre still pretty expensive though.
coupe with a gsi front bumper will look good and i really like the black and white interior you can get in the coupe as well.
astra gets my vote. i hate the driving position in the 172

You can get the coupe with full red leather interior, looks lush, its similar to the ones S2000s have
LeeM
19th September 2010, 16:22
nah its too much that red

Mk4(?) astras don't handle that bad imo. My mates 1.8 sxi had plenty of grip just not too much feedback or adjustability.

i agree lol
172 is the ultimate bandwagon car that every man and his dog moves onto from a saxo. the astra is a little on the fugly side. If it were me id probably get the astra to be different

Get the Astra, my mate has the 2.2 Sri and its a very nice car and pretty quick. Also the mk4 astra chassis was tuned by lotus so they handle pretty well as standard. Get the hatchback though, coupe's are gash tbh.

I would get the astra for the simple reason that they are easier to get power from and the noise of them is sex

Bandwagon is irrelevant, I'd get the 172 because I like it more, and no stigma matters :S.

Obviously you have never driven a mk4 astra, better than you think especially for the size of them as well.

Incorrect.
I have them as hire cars for years.
Not that impressed, GSI does look good in arden blue, but thats about it, engine does not seem to be the most reliable thats for sure.

Dude, don't bother. He knows more about car's than anyone on here... apparently.
A lad i know had a Coupe Turbo and he had nothing but problems. Especially as Leeroy said, blue smoking.
Personally, i'd go for the Clio. Just prefer the look of them tbh. Astra's never done anything for me.

i'd go for the coupe,

Ha so he like me then lol
TBH, since the days of vauxhall turbo'ing cars each one of them has the blue smoke of death, even the newer VXR's do to.

The astras arent too bad. I personally wouldnt get one because I dont like the looks really.
They are fairly quick and can handle too.
The 172s are awesome, have driven a few and handle very nicely. Power can be had pretty cheaply.
My mate has jenvey bodies on his one, which he is selling, and is pushing 209bhp. He is also the only one in the country to be using the standard ecu with this setup.

Are they both around the same price then?
You'll have more fun in a 172. Obviously I'm a little biased, so I'd choose a 172.

I have never once claimed that I know everything about cars. I am a car enthusiast and tbh I love all cars all my mates do to and we all have different cars so I am just speaking from personal experience.
I have driven many mk4 astras and they are by no means a 'GASH' handling car, i was just stating that for the OP's reference that they are good in the bends, if a chassis is tuned by lotus you know its going to be decent.
Just because your mate had a bad experience with an astra doesnt mean there not good. Its pretty common knowledge that mk4 astra turbos where weak. Thats why most tuned astra turbos owners uprate the turbo for the newer VXR one or better.
Once again this post is not claiming that I know everything about cars, I am just trying to help the OP make an informed decision on a new car.

I love how everyone slating the astra probably havent even driven one before!
I have the astra, its a good car, surprising well built and quite sturdy. Mine is on 60mm springs and the handling is ok, but tbh its a big car and the handling on the clio will be miles better. The power is nice but for a 2.2 turbo engine I think is a little underpowered. Does have torque though! Also nice at high speeds. A disadvantage though is having no 6th gear. I think it revs too highly at motorway speeds so 1. This drinks a little too much fuel 2. Sounds a bit annoying. Its been reliable too, got 45k on it and all ive ever replaced are brake pads and tyres.
In terms of looks I think the astra looks miles better. Mines is midnight blue with light tints, lowered and on black wheels, everyone says it looks really nice for an astra lol!
If your going for looks then go for the astra, if your going for fun then go for the clio.

Clio, people move onto them because they are good cars if astras were people would go there.

No, Saxo people get Clios cos they are sheep and keep buying French cars.
How many people do you know moved from a Vauxhall to a citroen and how many people do you know moved from a citroen to a Vauxhall?
Vauxhalls are levels ahead of French cars in terms or reliability and comfort and value for money imo.
After I sell my Saxo I will never buy another ever again.

To be fair I would never own a vauxhall I hate them and I havent got a "follow the crowd" 172 as I have the Cup.
Vauxhall are made just as badly as Renault and Citroen I used to work for them so I know.
