looked under my car other day, and where the rubber 'boot' is where the driveshaft goes into gearbox there is a black thick grease.

any ideas what this is, and how much is going to cost to fix?

thanks :)

Is the clip missing off the boot?

C.V boot...chances are its split, cost about £15 for a new one plus fitting (or try and do it yourself)... the grease will all come out and then the joint will start clicking, change it sooner rather than later or your driveshaft will need replacing

Labour to do the boot should be about £30. £40max depending on the garage

it's the rubber boot right next to the gearbox not the one on the outside of the driveshaft near the wheel.

i heard that you need a special tool to put driveshafts in/out ?
