so my natural thoughts were, well if some fucker is trying to break into a lass's house, knowing shes home alone... i got to do something about it.

as im walking to the garden i take a kitchen knife off the side and go out to confront the bastard...
security light didnt come on, as i just got out the door, and this person jumps out in front of me, and well its dark yeah...
find out its some jerk of a 16 year old kid (im nearing 21)
and he throws a mega hissy fit, saying it was a joke and i took it a step to far by waving a knife around. so he ran off to tell mummy...

am i in the wrong, or what?

There are two sides of this legally and morally. The important part of this on the legal side is you would have to show you had genius fear and in so felt justified to take a weapon to defend your self. So however unlikely if the police ever did turn up about this don't act a big hard man but rather tell them how frighted you where. Also tell them it the knife was purely for your own defence. Then in so you have not broken any laws. But if you told them you got the knife to frighten the idiots off then that can actually be vied as illegal.

On the moral side of things on the other hand every one see it differently. Personally I say good on you. Even if the kid startled you and you had stabbed him I would still see it as as the idiot kids own bloody fault.
