View Full Version : What engine would you choose?

Saw a caterham earlier and got me thinking, If you could fit any engine into your caterham "relistacly" what would it be and why?
Know i know some of the older generation may come up with ideas like the BMW 1500 turbo which produces along the lines of 1300hp but i mean realistic ;)
My choice would probly be the Honda f22c1 found in the s2000, it may only produce 240hp but with its high revving light weight engine designed to be used for rwd i think it would make a very decent lump to slot into a caterham.
Thaught about a s50 in the e36 m3 but think the cast iron engine would be too nose heavy and ruin the drive?
Discuss???

the duratec is alright, i would just go for the s/c type r engine.
the v8 atom is perfect.

Only problem being with the k20 is its a transverse engine meaning your had to seriosuly play to find a gearbox to fit it surly? (its fitted trasnverse in the atom for those who havent seen one up close)
Hence me choosing the s2000's lump ;)

Yer the 200sx engine is quite good being compact and already boosted.
Surprised knowone has mentioned the cossie for lump yet??

Why would anyone want an old heavy engine fitted to their kit car when they can have a relatively light, reliable new supercharged K20?

my old man has a set of plans based around the locost car, that have being adaptd to take a mk5 escort rs2000 4x4 running gear.
Would make an awsome car. A bit like the dax rush
Pity ill health has put it on the back burner for a while

What gearbox would you fit onto the k20 to get it to run rwd though??

Having driven quite a few I would say something small light and not overly powerfully. A turbo is a total no no for me. The point of these cars are there nimble and responsive. The bike engines are nice but a little to frantic really and tend not to last all that long in cars. No proper reverse as well so rubbish for auto tests. The old K series where perfect apart from they where not the most reliable engines in the world. The Zetec was great though I little on the weighty side. Something the a Duratec would be perfect. Reliable cheap and featherweight.

Are you positive it was not a escort cosworth or sierra cosworth? The RS2000 has a transverse mounter lump of an engine on and adapted front wheel drive box using a power take off. The drive train would to holly unstable for a locost.

Id put a 2.0 zetec in with boddies or a turbo good engines and cheap as fuck :D
or a R1 or busa engine :D

rx-7 turbo engine, it's small, light and exceptionally tunable or even a quad rotor engine.
Failing that it'd have to be an S2000 engine either the f20 or the f22 would do but preferably the f20 due to it's 9k redline rather than the 8k of the f22.

When i qiki'd the s2000 engine for the code it came up with the f21 and f22?? i alwyas thaught they where called f20's as well :panic:
EDIT: Wouldnt mind seeing what the s14 2.3 is like out of the e30 m3 also with a carbon plenum and some lairy cams.

Hayabusa or zzr1400...Zzr is much betteer for touring though... Both strong, highly tunable, high revving and powerful...and ofcourse capable of smashing 200 mph! Standard...
With the addition of a s/charger, 495 bhp is achievable!
Or
An r1... Just for the noise!

Edit, just highly tuned and capable of like 500 bhp... But still. A cossie lump.

As ive already stated...s/ charge...for the ovvious reasons! Smoother, faster and stronger delivery. Ive seen charged engines at 500 horses, but boosted dont hit much more from stock!...
