No, needs to be attached at all times, otherwise the washer fluid gets into the pistons.

It fine to go without a grill i havent had a grill for about 6 month until yesterday where i purchased a new one..

I wouldnt risk it for the reasons listed above tbh.
Stick a flux capacitor on for a bit while it's off and it might help though.
