Afternoon all,
I have spent the whole of today, working with some fiberglass. Wanted to do something for FCS so I thought about putting a DVD Player in my glove box. smileys/smiley2.gif
I have never worked with it before, so all comments welcome - think I have done an ok job tbh... smileys/smiley3.gif
First I masked off the area that I wanted to fiberglass (inside the glove box, spare that I brought from the scrappy). Then I applied my first layer of fiber.

Once it was dried I pulled it out (check it could come out, lol. smileys/smiley5.gif
/members/GaleVTR/A61F1_Shell_Start.jpg
I then added another 3 layers to make it stonger & had a fag while waiting for it to day.Put it back in the glove box & marked where I need to trim it off, then using a saw, slowly trimmed in down.
/members/GaleVTR/39442_Trimmed.jpg
I then made a frame for the DVD player & using wooden rods, glue them in place to give the effect of it floating, lol.
/members/GaleVTR/AFF16_Mount1.jpg
I then put the player in the slot to make sure if clear the fiberglass ok. First attempt it did not but moved the rods around a bit & went in, like a seal in water - smooth, lol.

Got a pair of old tights from my mum & stretched them over the mould.
/members/GaleVTR/DA6Z8_Tights.jpg
When I got the tights nice & tight, glue them down, let em dry & mixed up so resin to put over it, to make a hard leyer to start from.
/members/GaleVTR/37ZFF_Resin.jpg
When that was all dry, I put 2 layers of fiberglass on.
This is as it stands at the moment, finished for tonight & tomorrow I am going to smooth & sand it down, then paint it.

What does everyone think to my first attempt???

tidy job mate! how you find the tights though cause i've done quite a few fibreglass jobs now and havn't used tights lol did the resin soak in well or kinda just run done alot??
looks tidy job tho smileys/smiley20.gif if you need any help pm me cause im in the process of making a fibreglass boot build (posting pics of its completion 2nite smileys/happy.gif )
just a tip..... when you cut out centre hole you should really just put some resin with hardener around the bits of wood because in time, the wooden rods would come out of place as hot glue isn't the best in the long run!
smileys/smiley4.gif keep updating! smileys/smiley20.gif

Just got some picture updates for you.
Here is how I left it yesterday.
/members/GaleVTR/B7FZA_Last_Layer.jpg
Got up this morning, done the essentails then started on it right away, only 2 days off before FCS! With the dried layer of fibreglass hanging over the edge, stopped it from going back in the glove box so I trimmed it back to make it fit (looks messy!)
/members/GaleVTR/A7151_Retrimmed.jpg
When into town afterwards to Motor-World & brought some Isopon P38 Easy Sand Filler & touched up the build, getting it as smooth as I could at this stage.
/members/GaleVTR/18536_Filler.jpg
Let that dry. Then I sat there going through the different grades of sand paper, smoothing it & getting the shape there, before using some wet & dry on it when I was happy (still a touch wet in the pic)
All it needs is paint now, really pleased beings its been my first time with fibregalss.
/members/GaleVTR/C66BA_Needs_Paint.jpg
Has been a really good 2 days off, weather has been really hot, cutting drying time in half.
All comments welcome. smileys/smiley5.gif

Well,
Its taken about 19 hours but I have finally finished the dvd build, really pleased with the results. There are a few dents but you have to look really closely. Not bad for a first attempt - if I do say so myself, lol.
Few pics for ya - let me know you what you guys think???
I was not happy with the shape of the build so I applied a little more filler & smoothed it out to the new shape.
/members/GaleVTR/F5E78_Smooth.jpg
Once it was as smooth as I could get it, then primmed it.
/members/GaleVTR/ZF4EB_Primmed.jpg
after a few coats was applied, let if dry (had a smoke meanwhile, lol) then used some wet & dry paper to smooth it out again, one last coat of primmer.
Let that dry then put roughly 8 coats of colour on. went for a plain black so it matches the dash & dvd player.
/members/GaleVTR/5CF59_Black.jpg
Finally, had another smoke while the laquer was drying, lol. Put the cage in & the dvd player. What you guys think???
