View Full Version : Saxo 1L Timing

Hey all,

I've recently done an engine swap in my 1L Saxo. Grabbed a 106 engine from a local scrappy (TU9M/K, if I can I remember off the top of my head).

Spent the past couple of weekends fitting it and getting it all sorted. Went to fire her up yesterday and it just won't go. :( She's turning over, but won't fire at all. Replaced the ignition coil with the one from the old engine, so I'm fairly sure there's no problem there and I've also thrown in some new plugs.

Here's where things get fun. Checked the timing on the engine and it seems to be all to cock (probably some numpty changing a cambelt wrong in the past). Does anyone know if this engine is a non-interference engine or not? (Just so I know whether to try and get the timing right or just get in touch with the scrappy and get my money back!)

Cheers for any help, guys. :)

Even a non-interference engine can break something if the RPM is high enough.

The million dollar question....

Do you take it all back out, get you money back and do it all again, or fit a new timing belt and time it up correctly and hope all is good, saving your self a lot of time and hassle????

With any used engine it is always good practice to fit a new belt regardless. A lot of second hand engine suppliers that offer warrantied units require that you do this anyway.

Spoke to the scrappy earlier and he said we're good to change the timing belt and try to get it all timed properly, if there's still an issue he'll replace the engine/refund me the cash.

Will be giving that a go tonight after work and hopefully have a working car again. If not, time to get the socket set out and do it all over again. In for a fun week, I think.

im pretty sure these engine will hit valves if timed incorrectly, i suggest try and set the timing properly and see how she runs, also perform a compression check if your keeping it :y: ,

Aye, will see how it goes tonight. Should have checked the timing before trying to start her though, d'oh! Wouldn't surprise me if it's the reason the car was scrapped though so probably haven't caused any more damage than was already there! :P
