View Full Version : My car and the trackday!!

Simo

Study is now out of the way and its time to get the beast back on the road properly.

Here's my list of jobs... is it achievable in time I wonder?

- fit new drivers side drivesahft
- replace seized drivers side caliper
- fit new alternator
- repair weld-in flexible joint in exhaust
- Put through MOT
- fit new suspension legs & bearings
- buy/fit new discs & calipers
- confirm if crown-wheel damaged after driveshaft repaired... if fooked, fit new gearbox.

smileys/smiley5.gif

Ive tried buying new brakes but so far im told there is a 28 day waiting list!!!!! smileys/fcuk.gif

Also... on top of all that.

Should I leave all of the ICE in, or strip the rear again. Only problem is, if I strip it, I really dont think I can be bothered fitting it all back in again.

I could just remove the subs for the trackday, or go full on track-attack.

Opinions? smileys/smiley17.gif

you have a hell of a lot todo is all this on the blue beast

CampDavid
12th May 2006, 14:13
None of those jobs look too hard, 12 hour day of hard boshing should see it done. What brakes are they to have a 28 day waiting list? Can't you get alternatives?

CampDavid
12th May 2006, 14:16
I wouldn't strip it. I get fed up with mine when its stripped, just whip the ICE out for trackdays

Let me know when you are doing the break business please Simo' as if
possible i wouldn't mind watching to get a better idea of how to do it in
the future!! smileys/smiley2.gif

I think its all possible, you managed to get your uni stuff done eventually
even when it seemed unlikely!!

If you want a hand let me know.I'm sure i could take the ICE out whilst
you do something else.

Simo

I wouldn't strip it. I get fed up with mine when its stripped, just whip the ICE out for trackdays

Yeah, I had it stripped for a year but got fed up with it, so re-fitted it all.

The complicating factor is that last time I fitted the ice back, the rear was too low, so I had it hired. Now if I take the ice out, it may look too high smileys/smiley17.gif

Brakes... Im looking for 330mm 4/6-pot

Tarox have no stock and Hi-spec say they cant guarantee for 28days.

Ap/Brembo... wouldnt like to think of the prices there smileys/smiley24.gif

Take the ice with you, then just before you go out on track, so it doesn't look too high when people come round having a look at it, , whip the subs out and leave them with someone you trust..... have a few tears round the track, then re-fit the subs before your journey home.

Time shouldnt be a problem... im hoping to get it mostly done this weekend.

Unknown is that I think the crown wheel is slipping, which will mean gearbox replacement. Thats the bit I cant be bothered with.

But before I start on the big jobs, I just want to get the brakes fixed and get it through its mot. smileys/smiley24.gif

Got the beast fired up for first time in ages on Wednesday night. New battery sorted her out a treat smileys/smiley17.gif

Drivers side caliper seized at FCS last year and Ive still not replaced it smileys/smiley17.gif

I have 285mm discs now, which is why im looking for something bigger... but nobody appears to have stock. Will have to try another ring around.

Yeah i would give you a hand putting it back in.

Or you could put it in the back of my car and i could take up to FCS and it
would be something else to do after the track session? Then you would
have it in for the stand making it look a nice height.

I've never had a proper look at the blue beasty, had a glance at it last year
at trax and looked from a distance at your house. I want to be there for
the test drives on the weekend!!smileys/smiley4.gif

thats from today!

Simo' and I stripped out the ICE, went to Halfords to find they had no paint, went to a paint shop to get some mixed up, waited an 1 and 1/2hrs.

Then Danny Spate showed up in a skyline, decided that we should fill in the drilled holes (hence the brown patches). Had a cupa and filled them in.

Then thats where the photo is upto.

The interior is all back in now...

Ive been trying to work on the car all week, but it has rained every single day!!

Today, I made a make-shift shelter to hide from the rain smileys/smiley17.gif

Seized caliper was replaced with a spare I had in the shed.

Drivers side driveshaft was replaced with new item... but the box sounded a little noisy when rotating it.

Took the car out for a 10 minute warm up... and unfortunately the gearbox is DEFINATELY knackered!

As soon as I go over 3k rpm in 1st/2nd/3rd with slight throttle, the torque is too much and the gearbox grinds!!

Same old problem it seems... crown wheel slipping!

So.... I need a replacement gearbox... and FAST!!

MOT has been re-scheduled for Tuesday and should pass.

New brakes haven't arrived yet, but they were only ordered on Thursday, so fingers crossed for Mon/Tues delivery.

Still a lot to do!! smileys/smiley17.gif

I spoke to Simo yesterday. The spare box I had was in the Blue one after the original Quaife box ran dry of oil on the N.West Stages. Then we destroyed the blue one. That car is now up at L.A.D as part of the deal on the 205.

My car PASSED its MOT!</font>

Ive sourced a VTS gearbox... I go to select it tomorrow morning, then they will remove it from the donor car and give it to me for noon tomorrow.

There has been a slight misunderstanding with my new brakes, but they are now being dispatched for arrival on Thursday... cutting it close, but fingers crossed!!

So, if all goes to plan, the gearbox should be in and the brakes fitted in time for the trackday!

Another eventful day... smileys/smiley24.gif

Made arrangements to pick a VTS gearbox up this morning/afternoon. Was in no rush as the dude said he had FOUR VTS boxes in stock! Result.

However, when myself and Graeme arrived he seemed more concerned with the fact his dog was giving birth smileys/smiley24.gif

The 4 VTS's turned out to be a furio, a vtr and two 1.1's.

Ended up arguing with the fooker that the gearboxes are NOT all the same. He was a tit, so we left smileys/smiley17.gif

Now Im heading to Stoke first thing in the morning to pick up a 1.1 gearbox. Closest ratios to the VTs box and half the price... so it'll do for the trackday hopefully!

Fingers crossed the box change all goes well... AND that my brakes arrive tomorrow! smileys/smiley2.gif

Luke
25th May 2006, 04:10

Gearbox on, new gear oil, changed engine oil and filled up with super silkolene stuff which Oilman sent me (top service guys!!)

Cars currently driving better than ever. Im expecting this box to wear away soon, but atleastr for now, the cr should be ready for the track!

Just got to fit the alternator and maybe the brakes now and the cars ready.
