My locking wheel nut rounded off when trying to remove the wheel, my dad drilled through the middle of it so far but the rest is hardened steel, have tried hammering a socket on but it will not turn it

Any ideas apart from taking it to a wheel/tyre place?

halfords do a locking wheel nut removal tool for about £20 most tyre places will tell you to do one as they are not interested at least thats what they say around where i live

hey im a tyre fitter and when we get people in with the same problem, we get a nut to fit over the lock in wheel nut and hit it on with a hammer. It looks ruff but trust me it works. The socket you us will be no good but it gets your wheel off. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

I tried hammering a socket onto it, it went on but did not turn the locking nut and now after trying to get it off there is nothing to hammer a socket onto, am i assuming that i am now going to have to chistle the git out

i had the same problem on my vtr i just bought but on all four wheels, if u have a welder try welding a bolt ontop of the stud, its not a great weld due to bolt being steel and the wheel stud being malable steel which does not take a good weld, but it worked for me and we got all four off, Halfords do do a wheel nut removal kit but its 60 banngers.

i just binned the locking studs and bought normal ones after the removal.

At the moment I'm going with getting a decent 9mm drill bit and drilling away the outer part of the nut, that way i will be able to get the wheel off and use and extractor to remove the rest of the thread from the hub

Some people say they are shite, but I have used mine 3times (once and mine and twice for mates) and never had an issue

Last time I had this problem where the socket and hammer method failed I drilled thro the middle of the bolt a few mm smaller than the bolt and hit it from behind on the tyre with a lump hammer.

Might be worth a try.

Good to know someone else has used it too and can back me up as ive heard a few people say they are a waste of money.
Bargain imo and alot less fannying about. You can also keep it for future use for yourself or mates, lend it out at a fiver a go and get your money back ;)

Yeh definitely.

The thread on the inside of mine was pretty much perfect after doing 4 bolts so would easily be something to keep in the toolbox for future.

I didn't think it would work but for the price of it, and the quotes I was getting from companies to remove the locking bolts, i gave it a try and 20mins later had all 4 off.

put the wheel locking nut on then place a jack sideways between the wall and wheel and jack it so that the wheel nut wont slip then get some grips and try and take it off that's how i did mine m8

Got it sorted! My exhaust rusted through so took that to be done and they also used an oxycetalyn torch to get rid of it as there was nothing to grab it with, minimum damage to my wheel at the same time...well happy now
