Right then, i have just got back today from New York as some of you might remember..
I have gone to start my car and it is just turning over, it appears there is no spark to it so we got a jerry can and put a fiver in (i left it on low end petrol light and i know its been cold) cleaned the sparkplugs and put them back in and still to no avail..it wont kick in basically!
To the right of the coilpack there is the earth and that was undone so we put it back in and sorted that out and tried and it still wouldnt start?
Any idea what else it could be as it has literally been sat there and i have no idea why it wont start..
If someone could shed some light please? :wall:

To add to this, what were you jumping off? a car or just a battery?

Sorry if any of my posts sound patronising buddy, batteries usually give in around this time

Sounds like battery, any of your mates got a saxo/106 battery you can borrow to try?

Try bumping it, Although, a warning, it can harm the cat, but ive done it and its been fine plenty times.
Get a few mates to push the car, have the key turned just before the ignition setting, first / second gear. When up to a reasonable speed pull clutch up and rev
It does sound like battery to me, my battery was fubar'd and wouldn't start after just one night of leaving it.

Well try bumping it tomorrow, check for any moisture on the plugs, and general condition of them. I have a different coilpack to you iirc, mine being the box yours the inline, but i do know moisture can affect mine so it may be the same with yours. This may be a stupid suggestion but try warming it gently...

We checked all those mate, all seemed fine..
What do you mean warming gently?

Got the same problem on my car - been told it's my starter motor, so getting a new one in rather than a refurb.

My story is pretty much the same as yours. Car tries to start, but won't fire like it hasn't got the power/urge. After around 5 attempts, numerous swearwords it starts - like yourself, the cold mornings are worse for starting!

Oh right, mine wont start after any times though haha!
I think something has happened after it being sat there for ages!

Well I was warned by the mech that there will come a time that it won't even start. That, coupled with a dead cell in my battery means a sorry looking wallet. :D

If you take off the coilpack, you will see deposits of a rusty colour, or even water inside the stems where the spark plugs sit in it, this usually causes it not to spark well - as i had this problem, then again - the little earth you said was off, could have caused a problem to whatever its connected with

I am going to use the coilpack off my old VTR which is just sat around doing nothing, that should be ok *praying*
Will have to replace it either today or tomorrow!

Just a quick one, might sound stupid but you got antifreeze and that topped up?
My old works' vans didn't start because the boss forgot to put antifreeze in in the winter :|

Do you know what, i am not actually sure mate..
Do i put it in with the coolant?
Is it bad to just top it up saying if its a different make etc?
Reechard
27th October 2010, 15:43
Ideally needs to be of the same colour as the coolant already in the rad.
Try jumping it of the golf again, but rev the golf to 3/4k while you turn the key.
Sounds a lot like a duff battery to me. Also the coilpack is another thing to check.
Tringaling
27th October 2010, 15:53
I see, is it quite easy to check the colour mate?
Ok, i shall jump it off the golf and try that!
Changing the coilpack tonight!
Reechard
27th October 2010, 16:01
Yeah it will most likely be red coolant. Just take the cap off the rad and look.

do you have a multimeter i can send you a check to do that will tell you if the coil pack is u/s or not also the earth you said if it attaches onto the same bolts as the coil pack thats just a surpressor and wont stop it starting
Tringaling

Ok dokey, i shall check the coolant tonight then let you know but hopefully its not that..
