View Full Version : 1.5d Gearbox on VTS?

This sounds a bit strange, but I'm asking for my friend.

He is looking to drop a VTS lump into his car and do a conversion, but as he will only be running 10" wheels - he was looking to get a nicer crusing speed as torque and brute power aren't really neccesary.

What would be the ideal sort of gearbox for this? As obviously a 1.1 gearbox would reduce your top speed, but give you rapid acceleration.. but what would you need for a higher top speed with lower revs?

Thanks :)

What about a VTR box mate? longer ratio's etc so won't feel like you are 'ragging' it like with a 1.1 box

VTR gearbox with standard VTS engine = fail.
1.5d gearbox with standard VTS engine = fail.
10" wheels = mega fail. Will they even clear the standard calipers? i know the standard discs are 247mm (roughly 9.72inches) but then have the caliper/carrier to add to it, as well as the width of these 10inch wheels.

Waste of time sticking a VTS engine in then.
For cruising about a VTR engine is enough. and better on fuel road tax and insurance.

Due to the short rev range usually diesel gearboxes are quite long, but i'd rather just drive 10mph slower with a VTS box. 10" wheels probably will not go over the brakes and will look a bit crap. How about some 13" rallye wheels instead?

Its a Mini.

He's got a engine with some modifications in at the minute, producing about 70whp. He's looking for a project.

His mini currently screams through the lower gears and is extremely torquey, but when you get to about 70 it wants more gears / different ratios.

Basically he is looking at getting the VTS lump as its 120bhp, whereas the VTR is only 98hp (or 90) so for the small extra cost - might aswell go 16v and extra HP. With the car being light and small, it will pull quickly - just was looking at what the best gearbox would be for a more comfortable cruising speed. Doesn't hurt to look at the available options...

As for the wheels... Its a mini! Plus the handling on the 10" rims are lovely, and they look spot on!

Well theres a bit of useful information that was missed. You may find that the 10" wheels gear down the VTR box enough. There are a number of ratio calculators on the web that will help the figures. We can only guess here as no one will be putting the combination on a saxo.

the diesel box is the same as a vtr box tbh got one in my car, no real difference

My friend has just done this with his mini van. The VTR box is taller then the VTS box but still shorter then the box used in some (not all) oil burners. Though to be honest I could not tell you what box has what ratios in these days. There is a list online some place that lists the ratios of most if not all the box codes. Oddly I think it is on a Suzuki website but don't recall off hand.
