Hello everyone...

I'm rebecca & I'm 23.

I drive a EP3 Civic Type R. I am looking for a run around and have about 2k to spend. I quite fancy a VTR.

Is there anything I should look out for? Any common faults?

At what age/mileage should the cam belt be replaced?

Hoping to go & buy one this week. Just want something totally standard & clean so I am not putting miles on the civic.

Anyway thats about it really!

Cheers!

Hi Rebecca, welcome to the site.

You need to bare in mind a couple of things when looking at a saxo. I'll list a few of the common problems to give you a heads up.

1. Rear suspension (torsion bar) If the back wheels are leaning inwards it means the rear beam is knackered and will need replacing.

2. If the car has power steering (vtr will) check it's working. The pumps tend to give up and sometimes a wiring problem can also make the PAS, rear demister and heater controls working.

3. Check for puddles, dampness in the passenger footwell. Even lift the carpet up to check as the sunroofs and arial bases can leak.

4. Open the boot and check for rust around the hinges and lift the boot carpet up and check for rust around the edge of the boot.

Those are the common problems, of course check for service history, mot and tax. Ask for a test drive and turn the radio off. Listen for any knocking noises or dodgy sounds you wouldnt hear in your civic.

After that you should be alright.

holdawayt; thanks for the info much appreciated. Have printed it off and will take it with me so I don't forget anything.

Going to look at a gold one tonight.

Yes, I want a saxo, think they are good value for money, quite nippy and not bad on the insurance!

Will post some pictures of the civic in a moment.

Cheers for the welcome!

becka - i would say it isnt worth it owning a saxo... iv owned two a VTR and VTS then i moved to a fiesta ST which was shit... then i got a EP3 im on the type r forum aswell.. but got rid of it a while ago... miss the VTEC!

my experiences with saxos werent great (might be different for everyone else but id never go anywhere near one again!)

save your 2k or spend it elsewhere :)

Thanks for the tip, dont think I will be spending the whole 2k and the rest will be going on insurance.

Just want something cheap, fun and that I can chuck the dog in the back.

Saxo seems to be all those things.

And if it breaks it wont cost me alot to fix as I work at a garage! and citroen parts are very very cheap compared to honda parts!

I know hondas are reliable... not had one problem with my EP3 in a year and a half!!

My integra had a few problems but it was quite old and had high mileage!

My dog is banned from the civic he is white and his hair gets everrrrrrywhere.

Welcome to the site, thats a lovely EP3 :)
Where in Lancashire are you from?

When buying a Saxo:
- Avoid crashed one's
- If it is HPI Clear check for creases on chassis legs for unrecorded previous crash damage.
- Rear Axle

And check for rust.

Good Luck!

What you had done, other than the exhaust? I know stock EP's aren't a great deal slower, but they are slower normally non-the-less.

And Evo Enkei's suit them so much, love 'em!

Yeah it's a HKS... well done! Haha.

TDI north are bringing out a turbo kit in the new year, think I am going to wait for that... or it will be a jackson or a rotrex... haven't quite made my mind up yet!

KPRO ecu mapped by TDi north, DC sports 4-2-1 manifold/decat, mugen air intake & grill.

Thats it for performance, was gonna put an RBC intake manifold on it but no point if I am gonna charge it next year!! :y:

check for whines/crunches in the gearbox when yu go for a test drive as saxos have gearboxes made from chocolate :P also prone to driveshafts knocking on lowerd 1s

Love TDI north, was down there weekend before last for a RR day.

Would recommend them. They also built my mates 500+bhp turbo civic. It's aweeeesome!

lol.

what other plans do you for the ep3?

what air filter you running?

x

beckha
8th November 2010, 14:03
Got a mugen air intake to go with my grill. Will probably be changing it when I boost it as they are not the best to use to forced induction.

Got a 12bhp gain off just that one mod though.

x

wickedrob
8th November 2010, 14:05
thats a good gain.

what you thinking about changing to?

long ram with a hydro sheild?

x

beckha

I've not 100% decided.

Depends on wether I charge or turbo it.

x

wickedrob
8th November 2010, 14:14
i would charger it but thats just me.

love turbo cars but the whine you get off charger is hot.

you going to add a lsd too?

sounds a good plan.
think you can use a bos out of a dc5 too cant you?
anyway i will leave you be now as bored you enough.

good luck with both projects
x

beckha
8th November 2010, 14:40
Yeah you can just put a DC5 box in but the diff isnt as strong. It's okay if your just want standardish power.

Not boring me... I love talking hondas.

Thanks!
