View Full Version : massive vibration (not engine mount)

ok so i have a vts track car. took to bedford gt yesterday. the car now developes massive vibrations when on mid/full throttle aove 4k.

i can do any mph speed i like 100+ and as long as im not on heavy throttle i have no vibrations. i can brake as hard as i like and its totally smooth.

at 1st i thought i had a loose wheel. all bolts was tight.

checked i hadnt picked up some debris on a tyre. wasnt that.

checked i hadnt lost any wheel weights. wasnt that.

i even swaped front to rear tyres and the car felt the same still.

i then removed battery tray and ecu tray to check the mounts (baker bm and vibratechnics). all ok.

the car still vibrates badly. i have some footage to upload that shows it.

the driveshafts have not lost any grease and theyre not knocking.

only thing i could find was a split top mount but im not convinced that its causing such violence in the car. its not shaking the steering wheel but more like the car as a whole.

i can have the car stationary and rev the engine and there is no movement in anything.

i am a little conserned that it may be a damaged flywheel or gearbox issue but i do not have any problems with mechanical grip or gears? the car does not missfire! there is no knocking sounds either...

stew :wall:

If it was a flywheel problem then it would be felt when stationary.

Ive got the same problem as u but mines more apperant on full load and in fith , My gear stick wobbles and if u try to hold it it vibrates up ur arm, ive been told by a friend at gearchange a garadge that recon boxes that cos my saxo is too low the type of cv joints on saxos give this problem ,
Ive changed all of my mounts, strut tops, gearbox ,and wheels, ive just learnt to deal with it
Pls let me know how u get on and if u find the cause and ile let u know if i work it out bud cheers

i had this b4 it was a dshaft ,jack the car up both sides and get under and thur the wheels by hand and see if the driveshaft moves in ond out of the inner joint ,
the spring in the inner joint on mine snaped and got wedged in the spacc the roller goes just a thought bud

its worth a check on the inter bearing i guess...

had the car up and checking everything underneath it for at least an hour. wheels are stiff to turn but thats normal (quaife diff) the brakes dont bind and the shafts do feel smooth.

im removing the front legs to replace and check top mounts, insert collars this week.

but shurly any thig adrift at the front end would give a pulling or vibration at the wheel have u checked the rear wheels and tyres could b a buckled wheel or a deformed tyre ???
check the intermeadite bearing on the o/s shaft and the inner bearings would leak oil if they had play in them?

Is it the same problem as I have?- I read simos thread on a similar problem and he found out it was the crown wheel slipping- I think this is the problem that I have... not great if it is! Check out his thread anyway im sure it will be if it is an awful mechanical vibration...

i have had my quaife fitted only 3 months ago. if it was slipping id feel a juddering/loss of traction. like a clutch judder.

i have checked the tyres for blebs and deformation. they are 888s and are tough old boots.

i've had similar, heavy vibration under acceleration and it turned out to be a driveshaft.

any problems under braking? id imagine as they get more heat in them they will swell and get worse. theyre only 6 month old!

no problems with braking when my shaft went.

I had something similar and it was my gbox mount, know you've already checked them though.

You checked suspension arms/ball joints?

I have had this problem 3 times each time a different problem, first was the gearbox top and bottom mounts but the gearstick would move back and forward inside the car when i went on and off the throttle and with the bonnet up you could see the engine move from front to back pivoting ont the 2 side engine mounts I did the mounts myself they cost me about £70 for the pair and about an hours time. The 2nd time it was a bearing in the gearbox that the driveshaft passed through it was something to do with the dif I believe (I have resonable knowledge of mechanics but am not to hot with inside the gearbox so would need to check that) but the result was vibration and whirring noise inside the car at high speed especially, it would even happen coasting in neutral, but under load (acceleration) it would stop I had to replace the gearbox because the offside (driver) driveshaft was locked into the box some how. I had a garage change it for me with the box shaft oil etc. it came to about £500. 3rd time has been the wheel bearing and you could wobble the whole hub brake disk etc and the driveshaft would move aswell. This again I had a garage do i supplied the part myself I paid £30 for convenience but I could have got it cheaper if i had been willing to wait, and fitting was £70.

Hope this helps

Plus with all of those the car handled and braked as if there was no problem except when the wheel bearing went it stuffed the handling rite out the window.

Ive got what sounds like exactly the same problem, replaced bottom arms and gearbox as i thought it was the diff but still does it (not as bad though). Im just gunna wait untill something breaks now lol

I'd check driveshafts.

been too busy with working on my other car today to get a look in.

im not sure its the wheel bearing but im removing the front lehs/shafts and going to check everything. the gearbox has recently been rebuilt so i doubt its that.

not sure if all 4 tyres are flat spotted?

have you stored the car for a long time on the tyres? I have flat spotted a set of slicks before by doing that.

no. put them on day before use :(

going to remove the front legs tomorrow and inspect top mounts :(

had the car in bits this evening.

removed and inspected both front legs. all appears to be fine bar one split top mount bush (bit of play in bearing)

i have a massive amount of play in the inner driver side drive shaft joint. not stiff or clunky but very wobbly. its 4 month old so going back for exchange tomorrow.

will be building the car back up with bilstien group n dampers all round and group n wishbones.

ive got snetterton a week tomorrow. doubt all the bits will be here by then. ill just have to take the dreaded VTR!!! lol

Sounds like a drive shaft issue to me mate.

TRS do competition drive shafts (http://www.templerallysport.com/transmission-and-drivetrain/competition-drive-shafts/cat_37.html) if they take your fancy?

do you think your off at cadwell had anything to do with it? bouncey bouncey?

sexy_gt
13th November 2010, 07:40
no. ive looked at the footage from a few trackdays before. there has been a vibration for a while. only reason it has become apparent as bedford gt allows me to hit higher speeds. im ust pleased that i have found the problem so soon. only im at snetterton a week today!

So are you saying it was down to play in the middle joint bit of the o/s shaft? ill try that next lol

My mates just found out what this is in his 106, is it really violent like you feel like the cars gunna take off and make horrible vibrating noise's?

I put his car up on the ramp, and discovered where the bracket that hold youre gear box theres a bolt in there with 2 washers, I noticed some divvy cunt welded the bolt into it and im sure the vibrating is somthing to do with that bolt hitting the flywheel or somthing similar in the gearbox.

Im sure its the same problem though cause as he goes through the gears it gets less and less till he's in 5th and it stops. But i doubt youre bolt will be welded but there may be a problem with it :)
