Clutch is on its way out I'll bet. Exactly the same happened to me midway through belgium on our way to the ring in september.
Only way i could get it into gear was to put in gear then jump start the car, force it from first to second to fourth. Managed to get it 110 miles like that, into a garage in adenau and the mechanic found my clutch springs to be loose.

had similar to above clutch spring snaped and got wedged under the pressure plate fingers so couldnt push the release bearing in to change gear

Yup had exactly the same when my clutch was wearing out.It was caused by using a cheap replacement clutch which had the pressure plate machined too much so there wasnt much pressure on the driven plate after only 8000 miles!!! even though the driven plate had plenty of meat on it

Could be a slipping thrust bearing
