Engine shakes violently first thing each day - then fine rest of the day **PLEASE HELP!**

Hi all,

Was really hoping someone would have some pointers - firstly off, the car isnt a saxo but still French (!), a 307 2.0 xsi. The car has been to the garage twice - each time they say its fixed but it isnt. Found a split breather hose etc but this hasnt helped.

Basically first thing in the morning when starting the car - it starts up fine, idles ok/smooth for 10 seconds then starts shaking - a lot! This lasts a minute or two, and then goes away and the car is fine again. It'll then be ok for the rest of the day, even if we leave it and dont drive it again for several hours.

Does anyone have any ideas/things to look at? Really starting to get pissed off with it now. You'd be doing a huge favour - tempted to offer a PayPal gift or something if someone offers advice that helps (Yes, im that annoyed with it!). I cant afford to keep paying garages to say "couldnt find anything, further investigation needed - thats £95 please mate" :wall:

It sounds to me like a sensor fault of some kind, you would be best plugging it in and viewing live data and pending trouble codes (assuming it doesnt put the management light on constantly). At a guess id be going down the lines of coolant temp sensor, lambda (burnt out heaters on 4 plug?), MAF which could all cause a misfire with a cold engine..

Possibly the air temperature sensor this can affect cold starting.

Do you know where abouts this is? I assume its the same engine in other cars, 206gti etc?

A cylinder full of water would also cause this effect. Hows the water level/Head gasket?

Fine, no loss of water at all. As I said, after a minute or so it goes and idles really well, quietly - can hardly tell its running at all!

Well on the mk1 the air temp sensor is on the top of the air filter housing(box)

Mine somtimes does this. I get the fault code of 'random multiple misfires'. Narrowing it down im currently thinking coolant temperature sensors need replacing/injectors. Doubt the injectors it the problem, but i think they need some attention anyways :).

Ok so its none of the sensors.

Google etc seems to suggest a problem with the hydraulic tappets, a common problem on the 2.0 litre engine. Can anyone confirm this? How difficult are they to change? Getting desperate now!

yes the hydraulic tappets are a common problem, i work for peugeot and used to do a lot of these a while back for noisey on cold starts (sounds like a diesel) they are quite a pig to do actually, the timing belts can be a nightmare.

Another thing i would suggest if it hasn't already been replaced is the cam sensor, these are also quite common
