Starter motor mk2 vtr??

Basically when you start the car there is a grinding noise (like its slipping off the fly wheel) but if you turn the ignition on, and wait for the 'miles till service' goes off and the clock apears and then start the car, it fires up 1st time no problem...
Ive had it off and put it back on, nothing happened....
ideas please guys :D
