Hi,

I bought a '99 V plate saxo VTR about a month back. I've had a VTS in the past...when I was younger and a bit more reckless with my money haha!

Anyway, the chap I bought it off seemed sound enough, he's come round since to help me out with refitting a door thingy to keep the door open instead of it closing itself.

He said when I bought the car he'd put new discs on...and sure enough they look brand new, no grooving or signs of use on them. Said the pads are thick but I've not checked yet.

Now I'm a complete mechanical idiot, never done anything to a car before, but I'm looking to find out what's wrong with my brakes. From driving at a normal speed to using the brakes, there's a grinding/squeeling sound (both at once) that seems to be coming from the drivers side...asked the Mrs to listen out from the passenger side but she couldn't tell as the drivers side noise really is quite noisy in the cabin. Any ideas what could be causing it? I was thinking of taking it to Kwik fit for a free brake check?

Also, the petrol gauge bumps up and down three times after the empty lights come on, I read the 'earth it' guide, was wondering if the sender unit is located under the back seat?

Sorry to make this epic request a first post, just thought I'd get it out the way!

All the best

John

Forgot to mention, the car does brake fine, quite hard if I slam on (did some tests on a quiet road)

check the pads first bud!
could have brake dust under the pads causing it to squeel..

Just put some greese under the pads (not disc side) and it should cure your problem

It's not really a squeely sound, its more of a grinding that seems to turn to a knocking sound...

Check the caliper bolts are still tight. Also check to make sure the pads aint chaffing the disc too much might be that the piston wasnt pushed back far enough into the bore when fitting the new pads and therefore really tight on the disc.

Well ive only had my car a few days and in every corner its got nasty cheap rubber that grip like water on glass.
I was thinking of a set of alloys anyways, so why not, especially when new decent tyres all round is nearly £200.

I was just wondering what are the advised sizes for this car and what alloys would you recommend? any advice taken :D

p.s this is the car in question

Haha don't worry matey. Your best bets just to go on google, type in alloy wheels..comes up first website as alloywheels.com or something similar and it asks you what make/model/year/trim/stud count your car is and tells you whats what from there. I was looking at some new wheels, with tyres, the wheels, balancing and delivery...it averaged out around £600, but I just don't know if I can be arsed spending that much on something like a Saxo! Check the for sale section when you can, I imagine there's loads of alloys for sale in there.
