Maintanence loan covers accomadation, you can also apply for tution fees to be paid for.
Your maintanence loan has to cover rent, and food etc. normally isnt enough to live off if you like going out lots. So Id suggest getting a job when you know your timetable that fits in with that.

Depends if your parents earn enough, if your from a low income family then you might be able to get grants.
You have to pay it back afterwards so I would suggest only getting what you actually need.

ive been self supporting for 3 years so from what i can gather it doesnt go off family income.
im doing engineering, so the way i see it is ill either be earning enough to pay it back comfortably or not enough to have to pay it back so im happy to get as much as possible so i dont have to work as much so ive got plenty of time to do my uni work

Be careful with being self supporting mate, I thought I was as I pay board every month and have been working for 5 years. Because I live at home it doesnt count even though my parents give me nothing each month and I pay my own way... This is what a rep at leeds met finance services told me...

Tuition fees get paid straight to the uni, Maintenance loan is to cover the accommodation and then grant ontop of that. Only the loans are repayable and the grant does not have to be paid back. Bursaries are also available for selective people.

LeeM you will find that the SLC is one of the hardest organisations you will ever deal with!
Took me and my dad 3 days to sort ours out, right pain in the arse.
Feel sorry if any one in your family owns their own business like mine, takes ages.

SLC can be complete dicks, one year they fucked my finances completely up took them ages to sort it luckily I had a huge overdraft, then another time they sorted everything out perfectly. The thing is it's not like you can go elsewhere so good luck.

One year for no reason they decided to reclaim my tuition fee's which left me with debt collectors demanding £3,190 or whatever it is.
I eventually got it sorted.

This happened to me last year, and this year, I'm still waiting for my grant for this year and all of last years grants. But on the upside i get four instalments in one go....

Your local authority office/LEA, is Swansea, that says it all. the worst LEA in wales.FACT. Currently have a 4/6 week backlog of stuff to process!
Its your LEA that does any assessments,we just pay whatever your LEA says
So next time you slag of SLC,make sure it is the SLC/SFW you need to be slagging offski ;)
