View Full Version : Cars that are this spec

For my next car I was looking at a civic coupe the older ones.
My plan was to get a nice set of coilovers and use it for occasional track use along with some fast road driving.
Insurance is a bit steep on them though :panic:
I'm looking for something which will cost around £1500 to buy and be less than group 10, it also needs to be none torsion bar at the back and for it not to weigh a million tons, reliability would be nice along with it being easy to work on etc. Oh and not be small as I'm a tall fecker.
Suggestions would help thanks

My car is basically exactly what you described. I wanted the same car, and they do not disappoint. I spent £1100 buying and modifying it, worth every penny. The 1.6 non vtec in mine was easily quick enough to keep up with many cars and run flawlessly. Best of all it was only a few hundred more to insure than the 1.1 saxo.

I'd stick without the eg civic, you need a "simple" car anything with boost runs the risk of draining the bank.
The idea of track days is to maximise track time and minimise maintance outlay..

I'd recommend a Mazda MX-5

If it was satin I would spunk on that :)
Would it be rude to ask what your insurance actually costs and how old are you are etc? Would be good to know.
And also what's the handling like?

Insurance groups are completely different now, so for something under group 10, you're pretty much looking at C1s etc.
I'd say MX5 (as been said before) (and they're technically group 23/24 now), it meets all your requirements (bar not being small, but a low mounted bucket can sort that). Although, ideally i'd say go for a 1.8 import, as then you get a Torsen LSD as standard, opposed to the normal open or viscous LSD on 1.6s and UK models.

It used to be satin lol Handling is truly amazing. McPherson strut suspension all round with coil overs, pretty much brand new tyres and no weight it was really quite amazing
As for insurance I was 18, no ncb, M'bro, own insurance, TPFT = £1690

Thats not a smooth grill, thats just standard for a 1993-95 civic

When i was younger i found hondas where well expensive to insure, the saxo's where cheaper iirc..
Great cars though with endless tuning options as its jdm.

Yea the EK civics have grille's but EG never did. However I smoothed the badge recess myself that's why it looks so tidy

Trust me the 1.6 sohc non vtec is a very poor engine.

My brother had an EG6 ESi and it was a quick wee fuker.Pulled 141bhp with just some breathing mods from the baby Vtec D16Z6 motor.Would have gave a Vts a good run.

I really dont see why people think VTS is the fastest thing around....
When I passed my test I had a corsa sport 1.6 16v and that was even with A 106 gti...
Then if i dare to say that to a VTS driver id get shot for it lol..
Tbh dont see what the big fuss is about them tbh....

They're a lot of car for what they cost.
I can't think of anything else that can be bought for about a grand, with reasonable insurance prices and still keep up with most N/A cars up to 2.0.

You notice the people claiming their cars are as fast as vts's have never driven them... My S was just as fast as my mates 182 before it was cammed and now destroys it...no non-vtec civic is going to keep up with a clio 182 I can guarantee you I have driven plenty of 1.6 hondas, old and new

Coming from a Vauxhall background,i find that very hard to believe unless the Corsa had some tuning mods i.e inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and some mild cams.Otherwise if it was standard,it isnt possible.
Less power and quite a bit heavier.

I wouldnt say otherwise....
As much as I like saxo/106's... My mate had a standard 106 gti with low millage...
I had an exhaust system and a filter...
And both were even...
I wouldnt lie about it.
And yes ive driven a VTS.. dont worry ive felt the power :y: ..................

People aren't saying that a VTS/GTi are the quickest things in the world. They're saying a D16 wouldn't be keeping up with one without pretty extensive mods though.
Having experienced a D16, and a 16v 106, I can honestly say the D16 Civic wouldn't stand a fucking chance without mods, and by that I mean bodies/boost.

I cant see the point in comparing slow cars with other slow cars, slow + slow still equals slow
I consider a nippy car as something that does 0-60 in and around 6.8 secs
A quick car circa 5.5 secs
A fast car 4.8 secs
A super car below the above
All cars mentioned in this thread dont even touch on the 8 second flat mark so hardly worth arguing over them.

But a Pulsar with 320bhp+ will be capable of doing 0-60 in less than 4.8s.

Your using lets talk bhp ? to work that out i think it would be very difficult to get a sub 4.8 second 0-60 time in a 320 bhp pulsar tbh

I have used that calculator before and it can be very accurate.
Nothing comes close to the way a Pulsar can launch off the line.Get a good launch and a perfect 1st to 2nd gearchange and its very much possible. Not much on the road will touch a 300+bhp Pulsar from 0-100.
Talking from past experience btw.

Calm down people ffs. Admittedly my car was remapped, decat, catback exhaust, green air filter and obviously it was stripped. The engine is far from the best in the world but around corners I left the VTS for dead. If you don't like my story keep your opinion to yourself :y:

Had a 313bhp Pulsar.Came across some so called fast cars on the road and track and never had any problems.Only thing on track keeping up was an M3 CSL and at that he couldnt pass.Coming into corners were where he would catch,on and out of corners was where he lost out.
Friend had a circa 280bhp Pulsar and was doing constant mid 13s without a hard launch. With a hard launch, low 13s would have been possible(like the calculator would suggest).

i can easily agree with this tbh as my mate had a 5 door honda civic with the same 1.6 16v sohc engine no mods and was basicly the same as a vtr. considering yours is lighter and with mods i wouldnt be surprised if it didnt keep up with a vts
