Hi guys,
Need a little help as I dont often buy cars, am interested in a 1996 VW Golf GTi Anniversary Edition. Its got alot of miles but loads of receipts and history with it. Now I can check over the bodywork but want to know if i should be looking for anything specific or where they rust ect?
Thanks Guys

I know on the 1997 golf GTI's the anti roll bars had a tendency to corrode very heavily, I'd check them mate.

Not sure if they still done the 8v im 80% sure they did and if thats true make sure its a 16v!.
My choise if i had to have a mk3 would be a vr6 highline in maroon.

Sorry buddy, watched Snatch earlier :P
Golf GTI's are normally solid cars, as said above though corrosion on the ARB's, but other then that its only small problems, have you checked and asked the guys on the Golf forum? They might have a thread on what to look for buddy :)

Will try the golf forums. car look tidy so hopefully all is good. Anti roll bars are cheap to replace anyway are they not?

2nd gear synchro, faulty coils and distributors on 8V, corrosion of sills and back axle mounts, rear arches, rear axle mounting bushes wear, rust on tailgate, glovebox catches fall apart, that about sums mk3 golfs up fault-wise.

front suspension top mounts.
also ideling problems high reving ect so stay away from sports filters that requires the MAF sensor from the airbox to be removed. and TB tend to get bunged up.

And check seat bolster wear, tendency to wear really badly on the drivers seat.

Good price for an Anni.1 of only 850 that came in 8v.And still has the original red seat belts and golf ball gearknob. These are worth quite a bit so at least they havnt been robbed off it.Dont expect it to be quick though.
I had a 16v Anni and it was a really good car and well built. But they are sooooo heavy.Didnt feel like a 150bhp car.

My mate has a Black Mk3 GTi 8v 1997 i think, and To be honest the 16v can only creep ahead.
but his is in really good nick, no rust, no corrosion even under the plastic trim.
Thats what i would be worried about really, is conditon of body work certainly under the trim.

The nearest brick wall so you can crash straight into it.
Claim on your insurance.
Buy a mk4 Golf.
