Why do they get locked?

People tell members to use the search function. When they use it it's likely an old thread will be found... If they reply on topic, why should it get locked? :S

If it's a technical thread it shouldn't be locked but if it's a spam sesh I agree with it being locked drives me mad when a n00b bumps a thread and unfortunately i'm drawn to it like a fly on shit.
