View Full Version : Are you religious?

Not actually interested in the thread title question unless the answer is yes. If so, what I want to know is, do you think, whatever religion you believe in, that if you had not of been brought up with your parents believing it, and them taking you to worship and teaching you of that religion that you would be religious? Do you not think this is how faith is passed on? Parents to children at infancy, if faith comes from within, surely you would find that same religion regardless? It should not need to be taught from a young age if god is within us all.

For example, if you separated twins (with religious parents) at birth, one stayed with with the religious parents, one with an atheist family, would they both grow up religious? Surely if faith comes from within then this must be the case - if god is inside us all, if it doesn't, and it needs to be taught by the believers parents without the child making the concious decision, then it surely makes religion look weak, if you had grown up without that culture and expectation, and waited till you were an adult to make an informed religion on what, if any religion you want to chose, would it be the same one.

Not religious no

And religion is force fed into youths from parents, they grow up with it as part of their lifestyle so have to accept it, and continue with it in their own life when they grow up as they feel consciously that it is what they stand for

I was actually wondering the other day. What will happen when scientist's prove 100% that the universe was created by the Big Bang. Surely religion is proved to be false? Will people choose to believe in something that has been proven to be wrong?

I'm weird, get over it =)

Religion causes wars IMO.

Some people feel the need to believe in something, as a bit of hope. I couldn't do this, the worlds here to be tried and tested, we just have to live with it. & die on it. While making the most of it! Sex, drugs and Rock'n'Roll!!!

The problem with religion is, you cannot disprove faith, there is no evidence for it, but that works as proof.. Somehow, there's no facts, but there's no facts that a god doesn't exist.. So lack of evidence proves god does exist. not brilliant science I will admit.

That's the thing with faith and belief, it isn't rational.

But surely proving that the universe was created by the Big Bang will disprove that it was created by God? I'm just going to put it down to something that will never be answered.

Religion to me, and I by no means want to offend anyone who is religious, is like a kids imaginary friend. A person feels lonely so they turn to god. They have a problem and they turn to god. Its just something to turn to in time of need.

Shame it causes all the shit it does though. All this terrorism in the name of relevant Gods..

There is no evidence to disprove faith, but is there any evidence for faith? There will be none until Scientists sort their shit out.

i agree with you on this. im not religious at all, dont believe in anything not christened etc. i think its all a load of shit and like you said its just there to put peoples minds at rest when they're lonely, scared, etc. my idea is just life your life to the full and fuck what anyone, even "God" thinks about you. I'll live a good life and die a happy man. it causes too many problems as well.

For the interest of you Atheists, or believers.

http://www.youtube.com/user/TheAtheistExperience

Just a youtube channel which raises some interesting questions with regards to religion, and in particular Christianity.

Here’s some background info on the show host Matt Dillahunty;

Matt was raised as a fundamentalist Baptist Christian, and sought to become a Baptist minister. His religious studies, instead of bolstering his faith as he intended, led to a complete rejection of Christianity. He now continues to study philosophy, religion, science, and history, while attempting to educate people about atheism and religion, and "to prevent others from wasting another day on irrational beliefs". Dillahunty also served in the armed forces during the Gulf War and was also in the Armed forces in Haiti during the early 1990s.

So, as you can imagine, he isn’t just some idiot with an opinion, but a pretty intelligent guy with some very interesting points.

Regards,
Joe

I believe religion is often used as an excuse for war but the underlying reasons are often far deeper. Take the war on terror as an example.

Thats still an opinion lol there is no "proof". I ammnot religious, I find it very hard to believe people can have faith in a "god" but it's there choice.

Sorry though maybe I shouldn't have posted this, I'm just " an idiot with an opinion " rofl.

I was raised to make my own choices. However all my school life I went to a strict Catholic school and I mean strict. But more out of convienience as its 50 metres from my house!

In my opinion, Religion is power. I see some relgious people and I think, maybe they do live a happier life.

Having to read the Bible at school, shoot me down if you wish, it does have some very meaningful and good stories!

I'm not part of the Jesus Army. The GF is because her parents are big believers.

I'd love to be able to see their views but I can't get over the fact that someone can believe that a dude separated water and turned something into something else.

Agree that religion causes a lot of pain, war and suffering, as far as terrorism and Islam goes, I think the best thing for this country is if the media stopped associating the word "Muslim" with "terrorist", I don't associate them anymore, and no one else should, they are radical ,extremist abortions, the other are normal people. I don't agree with everything Islam stands for (sharia law, the culture etc), but then again I don't agree with a lot Catholicism says, or Judaism... The buddhists have never done much so leave them out of it. But all of the big religions have done (in their respective country's states) hideous, disgusting things.

And I really don't want this thread to turn into Muslim hate.

Watch the zeitgeist video on religion. It all relates back to people worshipping the sun in the early ages. Christianity (along with others) is derived from this but obviously instead of the sun, it's a person.

I can fully understand why people become religious. If it gives them hope and meaning then thats fine by me. I just can't stand people who try and force it upon you and won't accept other views.

Aye, paganism, all stems from one place which is why they are all so similar.

Agree, it's like psychics and mediums, they give hope to grieving families that their loved ones are still with them, but it is still deceitful lies, who am I to stop them getting comfort from believing that, no one, that's their choice, but I know it's not real. Exactly like religion.
